A lot of francophone people where I live tell me that they traditionally voted Liberal federally and PC provincially.

Remember the issue about the federal immigration department rejecting a suspiciously high percentage of African francophones who want to come to Quebec?

A parliamentary committee issued a report on it, and it does sound fishy. The report wasn't widely publicized either.

If it was Québec and not Ottawa that was doing that, and if it were Anglophones immigrants and not Francophones that were suspiciously rejected, it would be national news. And since that they are from Africa, racism would be mentionned. But it is Ottawa, so nohing to se here...

Going to Quebec and expecting it like to be Kitchener is stupid and old timey.

It's the bare minimum of courtesy.

That’s funny because in just about any European country asking a question in English is just fine and not taken as a sign of disrespect!

Look here, Sipowicz. If I went to Spain and spoke broken Spanish to the dude at my hotel, you think I would have a better experience at said hotel if I were a flip flop wearing old crank from Winnipeg?

My wife doesn’t speak French, but I tell her to use the handful of words she knows whenever she interacts with someone in Quebec. I also greet the people I meet in the local language whenever I am abroad. It’s just a basic form of respect imo. It takes me an hour to memorize a handful of words I can use to at least initiate a conversation.

My wife and I are perfectly bilingual and we generally lose our English if someone is being a dick.

If they're nice and polite, then we'll happily switch to English, and may even accompany them ourselves to where they need to go.

I think the gesture is important, but it is genuinely dishonest, unnecessarily politically divisive, inhumane, and hostile to pretend ignorance of a language. I don't think Canada or Quebec will benefit from any of this.

If you sincerely can't be bothered to learn a few phases when you visit an alien environment, then I say..more power to you.

Depends where in Spain, if you were on the plain in the rain….

Spoke only English in a dozen Euro countries with no issues, even in Ireland I was able to communicate in English!

You're talking about the gas station counter guy in Victoriaville who doesn't speak English?

The easiest thing to do is gas up in Edmundston. If your tank is full, you can easily make it through as far as Cornwall without stopping.

If you don't speak French then at the very least you should ask someone in Quebec if he/she speaks English before asking or saying anything else. That's what Quebecers who don't speak English do when they visit here in Timmins. They don't just expect that the person will understand him/her.

Non, ce n'est pas correct. That's a completely different situation, not deliberate.
Ma propre expérience au Québec est à la fois bonne et mauvaise.

Still, about 40% of the population in Edmundston speaks only French. Though I suppose it's a lot easier to find bilingual employees for your gas station there than in Rivière-du-Loup up the road in Quebec, where 79% speak only French.

What I love most about the "travels in Quebec" stories are the mind-readers.

As in "there was this lady who wouldn't speak to me in English, only in French, even though I know for sure that she knew English".

Well, you admitted yourself that occasionally you would "lose your English."

I know, and I am surely not the only one.

But they have no way of knowing that.

And plenty of people in Quebec actually don't speak English.

The example I cited is pretty typical of the "everyone I encounter in Quebec should dutifully speak English when spoken to" attitude.
