Excuse my ignorance since I have never seen this before, but what is this? Is this a stairwell, or an elevator shaft? Why is it being built separately from the rest of the building?

Elevator shaft, I’ve seen this with some developments, though I can’t say if it’s common or not.

A lot of new building put the elevator shaft up first. The shaft could also be part of the structural integrity of the building as well.

Anyone following the IRAC appeal on the Porthouse project? The 500 lot bylaw is killing this city and the appellants are pressing it into the face of IRAC as the excuse to kill Porthouse. 20 apartments have been built outside the 500 lot for every one downtown. It has been noted by some how quiet the downtown has been or has become. With the Covid workplace home based, we need people to live there. 500 lot bylaw kills this, so IRAC better wake up and city hall better push it as businesses are having a hard time competing.

Best move they made was to add a PA in Charlottetown. An expansion already is a really good sign, along with the Canadian Tire, all good indicators of healthy growth.

A post from 2006! Since the protectionist bylaw known as the 500 lot bylaw passed ten years ago, we've seen very little apartment/condo/new residences development downtown. All or most development has been outside the 500 lot. Sprawl is exploding which is quite evident. Since the CAO's termination, maybe city hall will see the error of their ways. Between the appellants at the IRAC table, the NIMBYS and city halls reluctance, the city has seen a decline in business and activity downtown. Something has to change.
The last week we've seen appellants challenge the Porthouse development which would inject new people with the addition of 84 units.
If this doesn't go ahead we can forget any developer will approach to add anything new in 500 lot.
Our eyes and ears await the outcome!

I just was at the Stratford Petro and I noticed across the road where the big empty lot is there are a bunch of machines and fill as well as a Brighton sign. Does anyone know what is going in there? So I was at the Petro this am and asked the girls if they knew what was going in there. They said a Shell with an A&W. Also on my way to work I noticed behind Shoppers they are starting the new road for the roundabout. And lastly I work in the old Sears building and was told by the maintenance man that the St.Louis was going in or building.

The first phase in constructing a new multi-use sports complex in Charlottetown should begin within a matter of weeks. The removal of the pool is to start in July.

I don't think I have ever saw an elevator shaft being built first like this before. What's the rational for building it first?

My buddy is the one building the two buildings on the Sherwood road and I just messaged him to ask. I would think that sometimes it could be structural. But if it is not that, you would think it would be easier when the floors are on it would be less staging to put together. I will post again once he gets back to me.

He just said it is easier to do when no one else is around. If they go floor by floor people are getting in each others way. That's all I got from him.

One thing that catches my eye about this roundabout is the traffic coming across the circle that has to get to the other side to get on St. Peters Rd. I can see this being fun!!!
Reminds me of the North River roundabout. Ugh!!

This will probably not but a super high traffic route though. Most of the traffic will be on the other legs of the roundabout.
