I hear it will open up definitely before September. Tokyo is hosting a tourism conference in September. Kind of hard to do that when you're closed to tourism.

I'll be going to Japan for month in June. Just applying for a visa now. Would have been nice to NOT have to get a PCR test, but such is life, I guess.

From PM Kishida's recent comments, it sure seems like the shift is really getting shifted into another gear. I still don't think they'll just open the floodgates though, they simply are not ready to go from 0 tourism to 100% as this Golden Week has shown.

Tourism is indeed slated to restart as early as this month for group tours, and more extensively in June, with a final decision slated for around 2 weeks after the end of Golden Week. This has been confirmed on both English and Japanese language news (I am following both extensively) and I'd say AC's motivation to surprise restart YVR-KIX is quite clear

I'm guessing that they like other airlines are already in the know. Several people (YouTubers etc.) had already reported that they've heard from hotel chain managers and all sorts of people at the top who are aware of a likely June reopening. Preparations are underway.

Typical AC with the bait and switch. Booked round trip to EWR in August; paid a little extra to get premium economy on the 789. Just got the email that they have downgraded EWR to a MAX 8 and so we get economy for the same price! Yay!

Yeah, that's an option. I'm not really that fussed about the premium economy as I'll just cancel and rebook but as far as I can tell that is the only daytime non-stop from YVR to New York. (the redeyes being UA/EWR and Jetblue/JFK).

Disappointed that there are so few/poor options non-stop to NYC. Perhaps it picks up again as tourism ramps up but it was never that well served before even with CX etc.

I did fly Dreamliner business class to Newark with Air Canada before covid hit. I was so pumped to hear it was coming back, and now? Unpumped.

Interesting, not enough bookings to justify keeping YVR over its other routes. I guess there was just too much capacity on YVR-BOS.

Some Air Canada NW22 updates for Australia and New Zealand that was posted on Aeroroutes.

Air Canada this past week revised planned service to Australia and New Zealand for Northern winter 2022/23 season. Additional flights have been added for Auckland and Sydney, while Brisbane sees frequency and capacity adjustment. Note effective dates listed below is based on Vancouver departure.

Vancouver – Auckland eff 10NOV22 787-9 replaces -8, 3 weekly (5 from 01DEC22, instead of 4 weekly. Originally this route was scheduled to resume 01DEC22 with 4 weekly 787-8)

So AC will operate both BNE and AKL route with 2x 789 for the month of Nov. From Dec to March, this will increase to 4x 789 with unused frequency on days 1357. Not sure if they plan to utilize those on a new route or improved frequency on a route starting December...

It is also a possibility that AC just put it to 17/18 as a "placeholder" when deciding what to do with the route? Similar thing happened to YVR-CDG, which AC moved it to AC838 before cancelled it. But then AC838 is better fit with a German route, whereas AC18 sort of fit with both KIX or TPE...

Last week, AC moved YYZ-NRT from 21/22 to 9/10 for the winter season (replacing the YYC route) instead of using its old flight number 19/20, so technically 19-22 are now freed up. Maybe AC will move the KIX flight again to those slots if they have the intention of restarting TPE somedays.

also a way smaller market to draw from then 2019. now you subtract 40% of americans who aren't vaccinated and cannot enter canada, and then subtract a fair amount who do not want to bother with the Arrivecan garbage the government continues to require then you can see why transborder will never fully recover.

Weekly in May increasing to three times weekly in June.

Icelandair arrived a couple of hours ago.
