YYZ/YUL would be the least ideal stops for YVR-India passengers, based on distance.

AI seems to be the cheapest option next June for India. Followed by BA. AC is more expensive than both, even through YYZ/YUL.

It looks like SQ will stop at end of October, after they went from winter seasonal to adding summer service. Not sure if they will add it back for next summer? I hope so, but never know what they are planning. They are keeping the SEA service so they might stick with that? Service to Asia is truly being strangled, the demand for travel there is just so weak that we are seeing a lot of instability in schedules. China likes to pride itself on how it handled COVID, but everyone's always known that's a lie so they can keep their impression up. Their vaccine is not trust worthy and they did not vaccinate enough to safely open. They are now way behind most of the world in terms of going 'back to normal'. And they have really turned Hong Kong into a different place, you can now see the 'limited sovereignty" at play, since this is national security for China and they are not letting Hong Kong breathe, so to speak

It's still too early. They have plenty of time to load up the next winter schedule. We'll see what happens. One thing is for sure though, the fact they aren't loading up YVR-SIN 11 months in advance like most other routes is an indication they are being cautious.

This being said, China and the likes restricting foreigner access is helping SQ, not hurting them.

The problems will start once Asian traffic goes up to what it was pre-pandemic. That's when SQ's YVR-SIN will feel the pressure of 1 stop competition, because right now, there's very little competition. Hence why the flights started in the first place.

Sorry ya I didn't mean to link SQ succeeding to China's closures, I veered off into just talking generally how Asian traffic has declined. Yes it's been good to get carriers like SQ, but it doesn't compensate for the carnage that's been felt since March 2020, and for sure Asia has recovered less than places like the Caribbean and Europe, some more than others obviously, but still pretty weak. It really kills me to say that and I hope travel rebounds soon

Looks like one of the daily YYC-YVR flights this summer will be on a 787-9. AC214 departs YVR at 13:30 and arrives in Calgary at 15:55. AC219 departs YYC at 16:15 and arrives in YVR at 16:47. I think the aircraft cycles through LHR and YUL, below is the routing I think it takes?

AC864 - YUL-LHR - 19:00-6:30
AC861 - LHR-YVR - 10:05-11:25
AC214 - YVR-YYC - 13:30-15:55
AC850 - YYC-LHR - 18:20-10:00
AC851 - LHR-YYC - 12:40-14:30
AC219 - YYC-YVR - 16:15-16:47
AC860 - YVR-LHR - 18:40-11:50
AC865 - LHR-YUL - 14:05 - 16:15

I think AC has sporadically put a widebody on the YYC-YVR route (during Xmas past, and possibly during the depths of COVID when it compressed multiple daily flights into a few?). But they have not had regularly scheduled daily widebody service in the summer in a long long time. The YYC departure from YVR is during a very busy midday widebody block. Between 11:00 and 14:00, AC operates the following widebodies (not all listed are daily, but all depart these times):

AC112 - YYZ - 11:05 - 787-8
AC306 - YUL - 11:25 - A330
AC114 - YYZ - 11:50 - A330
AC116 - YYZ - 13:00 - 787-9
AC882 - ZRH - 13:00 - 787-8
AC063 - ICN - 13:00 - 777-300
AC003 - NRT - 13:15 - 787-9
AC007 - HKG - 13:25 - 787-9
AC214 - YYC - 13:30 - 787-9

Completely unacceptable given what CATSA charges as fees that it takes 2-3 hours to go through security at YVR. The service provider should have level for service performance targets and should be meeting them. The airport is not even back up to normal pre-COVID travel volumes yet.

I would be sympathetic if it was a short term problem that they are working on fixing. However stating it is expected to be ongoing is unacceptable.

got a flight at the end of the month to las vegas ............... from bellingham.
no masks, no lines (tsa pre-check), southwest airlines where you pick your seat and bags fly free. urge others to explore this much calmer option for their US flight needs.

AC Summer 2023 Schedule out of YVR

Will definitely changed, but this probably shows what's the plan in the long run:

Resumed:
KIX (4x weekly 788)
SJC (3x daily CR9)
DFW (1x daily CR9)

Return to daily flight:
PEK, PVG, HKG, BNE, DEL

Reduction:
ZRH (3x weekly 788)

Domestic/Transborder increase/reduction for route over 1x daily are not included

Equipment Changed:
BOS (223)
ORD (Back to Express CR9)

Returning new routes (or summer extension):
SNA, AUS, YQB, CUN

Flight number changed:
KIX (AC 17/18)
ANC (AC 1079/80)
LAS (AC 1713-16)
YQB (AC 1903/04)
YXE (AC 7741-46)
YZP (AC 8291/92)
YCG (AC 8465-68)
PHX (AC 8815/16)
ORD (AC 8825-28)

Seems like AC is moving domestic Express flights out of the 85xx block for transborder expansion.

Flights NOT returning:
TPE, MEL, CDG

Interesting list, thanks for posting. Yes you are right about it being preliminary, and that it probably gives a good idea route-wise what they have in mind. Equipment could change, but barring any more awful new world events, there's no reason to think this will change much. I can understand why they are not bringing back those routes, especially TPE and CDG because of the entrenched competition already on the routes. I could see MEL coming back maybe the following year, or possibly for W23 depending on how demand goes. I know AC really wants a foothold in the North America to Australia market, so having all three destinations is their plan, but given the current situation in the world and with travel, having SYD and BNE is sufficient for now

Ugh. The metal that AC puts on the Chicago route is an embarrassment.

I have a friend who goes to Vegas every other month or so and always uses Bellingham. I used it once, it was ok, we used Allegiant and luckily we paid extra foir preboarding as we had space overhead for out carryons, people later in the general boarding had no room left.

Looks like CASTA is trying to solve the problem with the excessive delays.

https://globalnews.ca/news/8801896/yvr-long-wait-times/

It is hard to be sympathetic to CATSA. They may not be as bad as the TSA but they still should be a lot better than this. They are claiming post COVID its harder to move staff between checkpoints as the departures have less peaks that in pre-COVID days.

I don't know what's up with CATSA but last time I flew out of Edmonton, along the security scan line I was in, over 75% of the scanned bags were flagged for personal inspection. There was at least a dozen people at a time waiting for their bag to finally get to the front of the inspection pile.

My bag got flagged for inspection because it had a key ring in it. A KEY RING.

Happy to see Icelandair back. I will be flying them in six weeks as they are the shortest route back home.

In a statement, CATSA said it hoped to have new screening officer recruits ready for YVR “within the next few weeks.”

This is how they train them!

Don't get me wrong, I actually find most CATSA people polite and friendly. But they are quite inconsistent and make up rules for no reason.

In Calgary on several occurrences I have had to sit in the food court and wait for a flight instead of the lounge because they they think it is to early for me to go through security. Its only a problem in Calgary. No other airports.

The ones in London Ontario and Victoria are very strict. They are also very slow.

In Montreal they are obsessed with with the size of your toothpaste tube. I once had a business trip that involved stops in Saskatoon, Chicago, New York, Ottawa and Montreal. My last stop was Montreal, my toothpaste was almost finished but was confiscated because the label on the tub was slightly above some limit. It was fine in every other city I visited that week. But not CATSA in Montreal.

I once set off their chemical swab detector in Ottawa. When I asked what chemical it was they basically said they don't know. The machine just tells them its ok or not. I said to them I was in a lab at the University of Ottawa on a tour but don't think I would have touched anything. They now had to search my checked bags, when I asked what chemicals they were looking for and perhaps explain it, they made it clear they don't know and did not want to discuss it.

They need more than a few weeks training.

Air Canada opting to restart KIX rather than MEL and CDG, taking service away from ZRH to do so? And this is a surprise decision! (All of the presentation decks and docs suggested that KIX would not be coming back at all)

Seems like they know something we don't know...

I hope this means the border at Japan will open up for tourists. I'm dying to visit Japan again.
