Definitely some of that. But IAH is a huge UA hub, so lots of potential demand to connect in IAH for elsewhere.

For WS, they can drive any demand for IAH via YYC as the hub across their network and possibly get some IAH-YYC-Europe traffic.

For AC it's mostly O&D as they are not particularly interested in driving traffic via IAH or YYC, hence why it's CR9s.

Yeah it had significantly dwindled even pre-pandemic. Long gone are the days of 5x daily CO 737's on the route.

When did AC move up the start of YQB to May 1? It was announced to start May 20, but just noticed its now loaded from next Sunday.

AC did for the summer, yes. It's back in the fall.

Looks like one of the daily YYC-YVR flights this summer will be on a 787-9. AC214 departs YVR at 13:30 and arrives in Calgary at 15:55. AC219 departs YYC at 16:15 and arrives in YVR at 16:47. I think the aircraft cycles through LHR and YUL, below is the routing I think it takes?

AC864 - YUL-LHR - 19:00-6:30
AC861 - LHR-YVR - 10:05-11:25
AC214 - YVR-YYC - 13:30-15:55
AC850 - YYC-LHR - 18:20-10:00
AC851 - LHR-YYC - 12:40-14:30
AC219 - YYC-YVR - 16:15-16:47
AC860 - YVR-LHR - 18:40-11:50
AC865 - LHR-YUL - 14:05 - 16:15

I think AC has sporadically put a widebody on the YYC-YVR route (during Xmas past, and possibly during the depths of COVID when it compressed multiple daily flights into a few?). But they have not had regularly scheduled daily widebody service in the summer in a long long time. The YYC departure from YVR is during a very busy midday widebody block. Between 11:00 and 14:00, AC operates the following widebodies (not all listed are daily, but all depart these times):

AC112 - YYZ - 11:05 - 787-8
AC306 - YUL - 11:25 - A330
AC114 - YYZ - 11:50 - A330
AC116 - YYZ - 13:00 - 787-9
AC882 - ZRH - 13:00 - 787-8
AC063 - ICN - 13:00 - 777-300
AC003 - NRT - 13:15 - 787-9
AC007 - HKG - 13:25 - 787-9

Yep & Air Canada has done YYC - Vancouver YVR route on widebody planes ✈️ like 787/ 777 during peak holidays periods & in 2020 for a couple of months too.

Summer 2022 YYC will have widebody domestic service of up to 2-3x daily Toronto YYZ & 1x daily Montreal YUL as well, along with 1x daily YVR on AC.

While WestJet is 1x daily widebody domestic service to YYZ on the 787-9.

It's almost May and it's exciting times for YYC. Starting Sunday, we got upwards of 5 departures to Europe (2x AC / 2x WS & 1x KL). There's also 2 new routes to Europe, including a new airline. AC launches service to YQB, while WS resumes service to YQB later in the month.

Break down by airline, bolded what's new or resuming:

Sorry to burst your bubble, but no. I used to do a lot of United flying 2006-2009. Usually was on CRJ700, but for example, I got an A319 in 2009, and 737-8 in 2006. (And apparently I keep emailed itineraries for toooo long

)

If memory serves me right, United would generally have a mainline return overnight at YYC, and RJ's the rest of the day.

Edit: if you meant first for AA -- that, I have no idea.

AA definitely used to run MD-82s back in the day. In summer of 2004, I believe the daily schedule looked something like:

AA 1690 YYC 07:56 12:08 ORD M82
UA 1024 YYC 08:15 12:29 ORD 735
AC 0778 YYC 08:15 12:34 ORD 320
UA 1040 YYC 13:07 17:25 ORD 735
AA 1792 YYC 13:58 18:11 ORD M82

Moreover, IINM, YYC-Chicago had the highest frequency and greatest weekly seat count of any transborder route that summer, edging out Houston (14/wk x 733 on CO + 13/wk x 319 on AC), and Denver (21/wk x 735 + 7/wk CRJ on UA); and was the only route plied by three carriers.

Lots of flux/changes over the years...

Yes, AA.

UA mainline to ORD ran as recently as 2019. Don't have to go back 15 years for that one.

I remember being on mainline AC from Calgary to ORD. But it again was back in that time frame.

I knew AC ran it and obviously UA very recently, just couldn't remember if AA ever did. For some reason I always remembered it as an RJ if it ran. I wasn't very old.

In my case if the early 2000-2003 period I was fairly regularly flying between Saskatoon and Chicago. AC through YYC was my normal route down there.

They still had the old Canadian trans-boarder lounge in the B concourse. It was mainline.

Disappointing AC use to have 3 lounges in Calgary. The AC domestic lounge, an old Canadian domestic lounge in B that was used opened up in the afternoon for the European flights and the trans-boarder lounge. Now they are down to just one.

Even WS is still depriving its customers with only one lounge in Calgary.

Seems odd that with all the routes WestJet does too the US from YYC, that they don’t fly YYC/ORD direct. With less competition on the route it seems like a great time to jump on it
