He does have a point though. We are in a bit of a lull when it comes to downtown highrise construction, especially with regards to office space. It is what it is. We’ll see what the next 6-12 months look like as hopefully more office workers return to their offices before we can really determine future new office space demand. In the meantime I think we’ll see almost exclusively residential construction in the downtown core.

With 5M opening and so much WFH, San Francisco probably doesn't need new office construction right now but there will be plenty of housing, including towers.

Anyway, note that the Potrero Power Plant Project, including towers, has been consolidated but moved to "Proposals" due to its height. Sorry for my mistake. Thanks to KevinFromTexas.

I wrote this a while back regarding Amazon's proposed distribution center in Showplace Square...

this is the general area and use type I was referring to

More info here on the project site.

Looks like they're planning to have it open after one year of construction. Can't wait for this corner to get some foot traffic and attention.
I was by over the weekend, though the lighting was not great

this will be better than what's there now, and maybe a better use than the earlier housing proposal, since it's really close to the unpleasant freeway structure, but this is another one of those things that I could also easily envision closer to Islais Creek at the southern end of Dogpatch

Looks like the Hub is forming a nice little secondary skyline.

^ great news about the Transamerica site, will be nice to get the NE part of the block re-worked to make it more inviting, cohesive, and active

coming back to the Amazon facility in Showplace Square...

happy to hear that apparently the BOS were also not happy about it, and seem to have effectively shut it down (though the tactic makes me nervous). now just hope this means Amazon will sell, find a more suitable location, and we can all get back to what we were doing...

Amazon said Tuesday it will pause work on a proposed last-mile warehouse in San Francisco’s Showplace Square after the Board of Supervisors unanimously passed legislation that placed an 18-month moratorium on all new parcel delivery services in the city.

In a statement a company spokesman said, “We will continue to evaluate our long-term use of the site, and in the short-term we will work with our neighbors to look at ways to use the location to serve the community.”
edit: I've always wondered in the back of my head if selling to Amazon wasn't Recology's way of giving the City a middle finger, in response to being slapped for overcharging its customers. they certainly did throw a wrench into what seemed like a City-sanctioned plan for the site to me

edit #2: re-reading the linked Chron article, it may also be that the City is just trying to squeeze more community benefits from Amazon, not trying to block them from the site altogether. we'll see what happens

The city/neighborhood groups pushed back on the housing plan, so Reco sold it to Amazon. Now the city/neighborhood groups pushed back on the Amazon plan. Tomorrow, the city/neighborhood groups push back on ....

This city is wild.

This spot would have been fantastic for housing, and I really don't want a huge Amazon processing site here, but we're reaping what we sow here. Could have gotten nice mixed used housing, but it was vehemently opposed. Now it's exactly as zoned... and we're still mad. Fundamentally, people just don't want anything anywhere.

So infuriating. The city should have rolled out the red carpet for that initial housing plan, but Planning had to follow its own outdated zoning to the letter, and the BOS is so collectively anti-growth/housing that they didn't do anything to fix it.

I do like the term BANANA: "build absolutely nothing anywhere near anything".

ah, I didn't realize there was so much local opposition to the original proposal. I agree with you, was really looking forward to that one, and frustrated to know that my own neighbors mostly caused this mess

I noticed that this might have broken ground. Saw some heavy equipment on site:

Excited to finally see Foster's renderings for the redesigned/reworked Transamerica adjacent commercial building at 545 Sansome St.

Very promising and surprisingly attractive given the constraints of the existing structure and small, attached lot.

More info on SF Chronicle here.

I'd noticed this the other day too, and it piqued my interest, but haven't seen it move since then, so this could just be storage (which the lot has been used for over the last few years). I keep meaning to wander over to get a better idea, and your post should help give me the nudge I need, haha

I'll follow up in the Mission Bay thread

545 Sansome looks amazing!
