March 10th:


Here’s a closer look at the traffic deck on the north side of Broadway in Mount Pleasant – deck plates, girders, and precast girder support (concrete pads). The concrete pads will be removed once the north and south sides of the traffic deck are joined.

Hopefully this time will formally pin down the critical details needed for a budget and proposal that will satisfy the requirements to get funding and approvals from the higher levels of government.

Sadly, you have missed the parts that have not been studied.

Positively acres of public announcements that virtue signal politicians have not been studied. There are yet thousands of press announcements about which politician favours this or that, aspects of the project that have not yet been firmly linked to some politicians repeated appearance in the press and photo opportunities in abundance not yet taken place.

Now add in all the fake debates about whether the line should be RR or whether some combination of donkeys, mules or carrier pigeons are a few dollars less (which signals yet again that some politician is just "there for you").

I figure this to be good for at least 8 more years until what gets done is what should have been done 20 years ago.

This is how the CoV works. They spend all the money on studies, fancy retail store fronts to discuss the study, etc.. then there's nothing left to actually do the project.

I believe it was some 16 years ago that I had first heard of this being floated as an idea. I was about to graduate so knew it wouldn't affect me, but certainly the next generation would benefit from it. I think initially we had thought it would be in operation by 2020, which at the time seemed forever and a day away.

Getting infrastructure projects done in a manner where we can actually enjoy them in our lives has been one of the few black marks lost in a democratic society.

Yeah, when I was a young first year at UBC I remember a poster session in the SUB (No, not the Nest, I mean the SUB) detailing the potential benefits of a Skytrain extension to UBC. No, I will not say how long ago that was

Hello Gregor? Hello Justin?

Adding your voice to the illustrious politicians that got all doe-eyed with the Chinese communists and how they fast and recklessly they could ram a project through without due process or oversight?

And no I'm not defending how long it takes to get anything done in the West. What I would say is that we can thank career bureaucrats, planners, advocates and consultants and the feeding trough that is the public purse, their personal playground. Why do something right when you can drag things out, still get paid, and win that big fat union pension?

I remember the UBC subway being discussed when Philip Owen was mayor, so at least 20 years ago. I can recall Gordon Price saying that even if it was approved “today”, it wouldn’t be open until 2008 lol.

In 1993 they were still just talking about bus lanes on Broadway for the Transportation 2021 plan.

City Council March 29 2022 Report - M Line UBC Extension Alignment and Integration

TransLink considered three proposed station locations within the City to best serve ridership. Early work during this phase identified that two stations, MacDonald Street and Alma Street, were regionally performing. For the third regional station, between Alma and Blanca streets, station options included Jericho Lands or Sasamat Street. Millennium Line UBC Extension Alignment and Integration – RTS 13021 6 Initial analysis indicated that a Jericho Station performs better than a Sasamat Station across strategic objectives...

Since 2008, the lands west of Blanca Street within the University Endowment Lands that currently house the University Golf Club have been owned fee simple by xʷməθkʷəy̓ əm (Musqueam Indian Band). A covenant currently stipulates that the property must remain a golf course until at least 2083. Land use within the UEL is governed directly by the Province through the Ministry of Municipal Affairs. TransLink plans to explore if provision of future stations in this area should be delivered if and when redevelopment of these lands occurs. This could provide an opportunity for a station that could serve both the eastern portion of the University Golf Course and West Point Grey Village in the future.

Anticipated Next Steps
Beyond July 2022 – Subject to direction from decision makers, begin development of business case
