It does make me wonder what happened to YVR-KIX now that YVR-AKL is using its flight number.

Is KIX another axed route or is it going to come back eventually once things return to some sort of normality.

Was YVR-KIX ever operated by AC Mainline, or was it always just AC Rouge? Especially towards the end of the route before it was taken off the schedule.

I only remember them operating it with the 767. And since the 767's have now all been retired, there isn't a plane in the Rouge fleet that could operate this route. If this route wasn't or barely profitable with the cost structure of Rouge, I highly doubt it would come back as mainline AC?

It was a mainline B767, A340, and even a B744 route 20 odd years ago.

For the Summer 2019 season, it was switched back to Mainline operations and fly 5x weekly with the Boeing 787-8.

https://aircanada.mediaroom.com/2018-10-...nternational-Destinations-in-Summer-2019

For the Summer 2020 season it was increase up to 6x weekly and would use the Boeing 787-9. Between September and October it would fly 1x weekly with the Boeing 787-9 and 5x weekly with the Boeing 787-8.

Maybe AC6x would be a better number for the route.

We may know what happens in about a month when AC release its S23 schedule. Currently they only release up to Apr 30, 2023.

YVR is now cancelling the central utilities facility and will complete the building as the Airport Commerce Centre with 300,000 sqft of industrial or office space. The geothermal system may still be completed.

EDIT: They will need 5 floors to get 300k sqft, I’m curious to see how they will achieve this.

Vancouver Airport Authority has announced it is looking for a private sector partner to complete the partially-built industrial building that was previously intended to be the Central Utilities Building as part of the pre-pandemic CORE building program.

However, instead of completing the utilities building for its originally planned uses, it is now set to become the Airport Commerce Centre — 300,000 sq ft of industrial space, and potentially office space, with contiguous floor plates of over 60,000 sq ft and generous ceiling heights.

YVR has contracted commercial real estate firm Cushman & Wakefield to help the airport secure a development partner and long-term lease tenant for the building.

…

Alyssa Smith, a spokesperson for Vancouver Airport Authority, also told Daily Hive Urbanized the pivot for turning the building into the Airport Commerce Centre does not preclude the potential for the geoexchange to be completed as originally planned. It would be largely located within the basement of the building.

However, she says YVR is still in the process of determining whether the construction of the geoexchange will be part of the airport’s multi-faceted strategy of reaching net-zero emissions on direct airport authority operations by 2030. More details will be released later this year on the net-zero strategy and future of the geoexchange project.

Find it odd that building has a basement that will house "critical infrastructure". I though sea island was at or below sea level.

Tacit acknowledgement that green energy comes with a hefty price tag.

Took a quick look on FR24 and it looks like PAL will be using Vancouver as a tech stop for their flights from Toronto and New York back to Manila.

Flights to Toronto and New York will continue to be nonstop.

The CORE building always seemed a bit unrealized to me.. I get they are going to go green fully, but dedicating a facility of this size in a prime spot was always a bit odd to me. A utilities facilitiy is something they could do airside, like the new Airside Operations Facility that opened a few years ago. I always said the CORE spot was way too primo for a glorified maintenance facility, it should be a hotel or office or (as it turns out) light industrial. Much more fitting uses for a building in this location. Kudos to YVR for having the balls to make this change happen. Had this been in CoV, it would've been a huge thing...

I don't think YVR is giving up or shrugging off their environmental/climate goals, but I think they just saw the way better value in using their property this way, and would continue their environmetal goals in a new way. As I said, a facility out arside in one of the vacant spaces between taxi ways or even between the terminal and the AC hangar. That would be a much better spot, and could even have parking on the first couple levels to compensate for losing the existing surface lots. I think YVR should seriousky consider that location for CORE

Was the CUB about environmental performance save for the geothermal system? From what little details were announced I though it was mainly about increasing the capacity of the heating & cooling system and back up power supply while having them in a post disaster building.
The CUB would have replaced the existing 1960s era facility which, along with the backup generators as built, currently has two backup generators installed outside.

I find it sad that Seattle is going FULL TILT on a new terminal and bridge, etc >> https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/seattle-tacoma-international-airport-sea-tac-c-concourse-expansion

yet the losers running YVR ... who thought it was SO important to go green and as stated in the above poster "being the greenest airport in the world"

what changed? why is that lunatic goal still not being aimed for? why can Seattle continue their plans and add NEW plans ... yet we put up the white surrender flag?

also lets be real here .... that Power Building is in a HORRIBLE place to be turned into Industrial. and the last thing we need is dozens of trucks headed in and out of the heart of the airport every day? office I can see but industrial? pure nutjob stuff.

Whats next industrial right in the heart of UBC? or in the heart of SFU up the hill?

Not sure what we want to build a new terminal right now. The new terminal expansion just opened last year, and YVR now have more than enough terminal capacity to handle even pre-pandemic traffic.

Just a quick check on the gate usage today... there are a total of 29 gates not in use (20 bridges, 9 remote - 4 in A, 3 B, 1 C, 11 D, 10 E), and 10 more gates only handle a single flight today. Not sure if there's even a need to build more terminal in the near future. I don't expect they'll proceed with the proposed concourse F for a long time.

SEA on the other hand, had always been short in gates and terminal space... especially with DL and now AA trying to setup hub/focus city right now...

Do you think AC will ever resume TPE? Their times (and fares) were much better than EVA.

I'm not suggesting we build more terminal space ... I'm suggesting you know we finish off the Parkade and Green Energy Building ...... as we all know how VERY VERY VERY important having the Green Energy Building is .... you know so we can brag to other airports and you know charge the end users AIF's to fund these Cadillac projects.

This is what happens when YVR *had* buckets and buckets of money from increasing AIFs and a fairly new daily car rental fee (started at $5/day and has gone up every year.. now almost $6)... that money flow has dried up for now.. but will be back soon enough.

I don't think the intent for the CORE building is for major industrial, it is likely going to be mostly office. ANd light industrial can be things like a 3D printer office, which won't have trucks and trucks coming and going all day. And it is super transit accessible, I think commerical use is amuch better use of the space than the green energy building. They can put that somewhere airside, it didn't need to be un such a prominent location, which is mucg better suite for office space

If they were very very very committed to the environment they would get rid o the airport surcharge on transit. They did not.

Really would have liked them to incorporate another hotel there to be honest. One with a little less luxury and more functional than the Fairmont, charging more accessible prices would do quite well I think.

The location really didn't make sense for a utility building. Commercial a little better. Heck we could've built a mini-mall there with a centrepiece like the Changi Waterfall and have better utilized the space.
