To answer the question (in good faith):

Quote:
2018
Bligh: East Van
Boyle: Grandview-Woodland
Carr: West End
De Genova: East Van
Dominato: Hastings-Sunrise
Fry: Strathcona
Hardwick: Kitsilano
Kirby-Yung: Oakridge/Cambie
Swanson: DTES
Wiebe: Mount Pleasant

2014
Affleck: Downtown
Ball: Cambie/Main
Carr: West End (duplicate)
De Genova: East Van (duplicate)
Deal: Kitsilano
Jang: Renfrew-Collingwood
Louie: East Van
Meggs: False Creek
Reimer: Trout Lake
Stevenson: West End
So, "how many councillors live outside of Yaletown, downtown West End, or in and around Strathcona/Grandview Woodland area?" Over the last eight years, 13/18, or 72% - we just need somebody from Killarney or Marpole.

Again, see the last paragraph of my last post to see my “point”. But to restate it in simple terms, this city is is now and has been for a while been run by buffoons who all come from the same general background and live in a very particular area of the city. If you go back through the last few elections, you definitely see a pattern emerge. To get ahead in the political scene in Vancouver you must attach yourself to a party and/or beholden to the special interest group you belong to.

Entire segments of the population are shut out of this system, and that ain’t so good.
your frustration amounts to nothing. You keep calling them buffoons but you can't beat them, so what does that make you exactly Chill, the city isn't as bad as you say if you just take a walk outside. None of the problems you stated are Vancouver-specific phenomenons. Blaming everything on cityhall is just shallow critical thinking

^ Well, he's right. I haven't lived in Vancouver for many years, but I'm going to donate $50k or thereabouts to the most serious candidates this election term that I think can actually win, along the lines of what this guy you're arguing with supports, NPA or (increasingly) not.

Elections BC would like to see it too. "You can give a total of $1,250.00 to a local elections candidate or elector organization per campaign." Anything more than that is illegal.

Thanks, great summary. That's about what I was expecting. Nobody in the Dunbar area or that part of the city, which is of course not too dense. Population wise, I bet they cover the majority of the city.

Not that I care too much where they live. If you live in Yaletown and don't know what Marpole is like, you need to educate yourself if you think you should be on city council. It's your job!

So who are you going to donate to? NPA? Ken Sim? Sim came very close to winning last time, and the NPA has had multiple council members in each council for decades. Wouldn't that make them part of the problem?

To restate in simple terms: the above is demonstrably false.

That's almost politics in general.

I'd love to hear what special interest groups you think are behind each of the councilors and mayor (who BTW is an independent).

I’m not tying to “beat them” but thanks for coming out. And no, I’ll keep pointing out the horrible job they have done in serving the citizens of this city. And I never said anywhere they’re a Vancouver only phenomenon; there are plenty of poorly run cities out there. Why strive to be among them? Why not strive to be among the best instead of the worst?
And yes, every single policy I mentioned previously is a direct result of city hall. Wish there was someone else to blame, but sadly there isn’t

Still waiting for the demonstrably part. 60% come from the exact same industry. Feel free to verify.

The largest is the development community but if we’re really talking special interest we have trade unions, a slew of poverty non profits but one of the highest profile being Portland Hotel Society. Environmental groups (international ones based outside the country, to name a few.

Migrant_Coconut did your work for you, which showed your statement about where they live to be wrong.

You'll have to be specific in all future claims, or it's assumed they are also wrong.

You’re way off on your areas and numbers. “Trout Lake” is not an area. Unless she actually lives in the water. Trout Lake falls within Grandview Woodlands Stevenson is also in the West End. (Another area identified) you also forgot the mayor and Yaletown. The “West End” is also one of the areas identified. Ditto for “downtown.” “False Creek” also not an area, and I’m pretty sure Meggs fell into one of the identified areas. (Not sure about that one though). These areas all have names.
And no we aren’t “just missing Killarney and Marpole.” We’re also missing Dunbar, Point Grey, Arbutus, Riley Park, Victoria Fraserview plus others. Basically anything south of Broadway or you know, the vast majority of Vancouver proper. Other than that, we’re a regular UN.

Interesting question would be the standard arguments for and against a ward system. Cities where I've lived this pits the downtown against the more SF home areas.

There would be a total of 37 candidate slots with Mayor + Council, Parks Board and School Board at $1,250, so that should be a total of $46,250. Not quite $50k but close.

The mixed system with 5 wards and 5 at-large seems to be a reasonable compromise. I think Stewart and/or somebody else on council was proposing it.

lol, I'll even match his lobbying expense if he shows that he sent a check to 37 people.

London, many European & Australian cities, Singapore, most Japanese cities, etc. etc.. In fact, if you do travel, you will get to see that many cities around the world, particularly those outside North America, are much better run than ours. In fact, I dare say that we are probably at the bottom of the heap when compared to other Canadian cities. Just look at DTES and we lose hands down. In the well-run cities, you constantly see maintenance/cleaning crew everywhere in town working. You feel secure seeing policemen patrolling the streets on foot. Such things are missing in Vancouver: everyone seems to be taking extended breaks. We are a lazy town.
