Yeah I just looked on Google Maps and the placement of the road looks like that old highway.

I don’t think that aerial photo of Ambleside is from the 1950s despite the caption. For one, Park Royal South didn’t open until the early 1960s, and I *think* the overpass over Marine Drive wasn’t built until mall expansion in the 1970s.

Yeah Park Royal South was 1962. Park Royal Towers were 1964-1966. Kapilano 100 office tower is 1972.

I think the last remnant remains in the name of the 401 Inn on the southeast corner of Boundary and Grandview.

Yeah, the 400-series route designations were used for 4-lane expressways. They used it in Ontario too, I always assumed it was Canada-wide but since these things are all provincially controlled that may well be wrong.

According to the Wikipedia article, the "400" designation was introduced in BC in 1964 with the completion of the Trans-Canada, but there were only two highways named in this fashion (401 and 499) and the practice was discontinued in 1973.

It's crazy that Westview still had an intersection until 1997.

Yes, I remeber the old Upper Levels Highway in the early 1970s during construction of the current route - it was as twisty as Marine Drive in places.

The one task remaining – a rather important one – is that the ministry is still waiting on some electronic components currently held up across the border, which will allow the combined Main Street/Dollarton Highway on-ramp to sense how many drivers are queued up on both sides and allocate green lights accordingly to flush out traffic. Currently, the signal operates on a timer alone. The adaptive system should be online and reducing back-ups along Main Street soon, Porter said.

Ha, never quite thought of it that way; when one drives it so frequently, it all blurs together and I just think of it as merging the third lane before the highway reaches the bridge. As visualized, one has to wonder why they didn't extend the lane to begin with.

Similarly, it would make sense to extend the Lynn Valley eastbound onramp as a third lane southbound down the Cut all the way to the Mountain Highway offramp.

Assume they have a limited budget. They could also probably use some more overpasses across the highway at some point if that helps keep local traffic off of the highway. Though no residents living on each side of that overpass would probably not like it.

Exactly. Connecting Mountain Highway west to 13th or 15th (with an overpass across the Cut) and east to Lillooet Road across Lynn Creek would help a lot with east-west local traffic in North Vancouver. Likewise, linking Keith Road in West Vancouver across the Capilano River to somewhere on Capilano Road in the District would help with keeping local traffic off of that part of the freeway. Not holding my breath for any of those, however...

When they built the 6-lane section (plus exit/merge lanes) between Westview and Lonsdale, was there a long-term plan to do more?? Seems someone wanted to 6-lane the highway, but it just never got done. Not really sure how far a 6-lane highway would be worth constructing, or even make a difference though, but perhaps for the benefit of local traffic?

Well they were going from a highway with intersections to that which seemed like a giant leap. They might need six lanes between Taylor Way and Lonsdale because of the amount of cross-North Shore traffic but they need to fix short on-ramps like at Capilano which cause a lot of the backlog of straightening the Capilano River section.

It seems like any additional lanes on the highway will be dedicated for transit.

Did the parts finally arrive to make the Main/Dollaraton lights wait based on traffic? Apparently they were stuck in transit at the border or something and the lights were set to a simple time based pattern.

It seems like they might be working that way. They certainly cycle when traffic hits the loops. I'm not sure if the Dollarton phase increases in duration though.
