Some WS related notes. WS Link's first Transborder destination appears to potentially be GEG, as Pacific Coastal has applied to USDOT to operate flights with YYC/YVR-GEG specifically mentioned as initial routings.

Also, this weekend WS filed its initial W22 schedule. It's basically a carbon copy of the pre-COVID winter schedule plus SFO & SNA added.

The only real change (so far) is that SEA/PDX appear to be staying twice daily year-round and IAH was dropped down to just once daily.

Interesting to see that IAH hasn't been super successful in the winter. (Obviously more changes to come)

Are they code-sharing IAH with anyone? I’ve transferred through their quite often on star alliance.

The weather just isn’t that good there to justify it being a preferred destination leisure tourism wise.

I think WS was targeting O&D mostly on that route over connections. DL does codeshare on the flights.

If my memory serves correct, they had terrible/not great loads on the 7am flights anyways.

WestJet’s Facebook page mentions Calgary-London Gatwick (LGW) operating up to 4x weekly too like London Heathrow (LHR).

Though some changes are still possible. Will see as it gets closer.

As it currently is scheduled WS1/2 is still loaded for sale for once daily between May and September.

Maybe pre-Covid. Traveling now is too complicated already, why would someone want to connect through a third country on their way to Europe? 1X daily WestJet can't compete with 9X OneWorld Alaska flights GEG-SEA.

I think these frames would be better used by WS flying YVR-SEA/PDX. There is decent enough O/D on those routes, more than YYC/YVR-GEG.

I think WS is leaving YVR-SEA to DL, the route is already pretty crowded so I think WS (esp with it's possible Skyteam ambitions) wants DL to have this one. PDX is possible, it isn't close to as big a market as SEA, and AC and AS haven't changed capacity much, so it doesn't appear to be high growth either. I think the GEG route could do well, especially with that equipment size

WS is temporarily suspending YYC-LGW between March 26-April 30, based on its latest schedule change.

As of now, WS plans 4x weekly LHR and 3x weekly CDG in April.

Additional WS changes to the April schedule:

SEA - Evening departure now starts April 1st instead of previously planned mid-May. On 3 days a week, there will be two daily flights.

IAH - On Monday and Fridays, it goes back to the pre-COVID early morning and noon departure.

-KLM now shows a mix of 789/772.
-Edelweiss operates on Wednesday instead of Thursday.

I don't see how WS doesn't bring ATL to at least 10x weekly next summer, it's just jam packed everyday even when other transborders are low.

82% of pax connecting onto DL

^Pre-COVID, I had always assumed WS would eventually go double daily on ATL.

Its a busy week for new and returning routes.

Yesterday: F8 launched LAS
Today: F8 starts AZA, AC resumes OGG
Tomorrow: WS resumes PUJ/FLL, AC starts HNL
Sunday: WS starts LIH / KOA

I said from YVR, not YYC. I know WS is on the YYC routes, that's my point, they want that market, but are happy to leave the YVR routes to others, and just codeshare on the SEA routes.

That makes sense. I don't think there is a lot of O&D traffic between YVR-SEA. It is mostly going to be connecting traffic given all the other options including the train and sea plane during pre-covid time. Most of it is going to be connections.

WS is better positioned to connect between westjet flights in Calgary. Delta is better positioned to connect between Delta flights in Seattle.

There’s actually quite a bit of O&D between YVR and SEA, largely from companies like Amazon and Microsoft. The E175 that Delta uses has a premium product, which is probably more suited to that market.
