I know Hannah has enjoyed seeing her colleagues in-person again, though I can’t imagine a time they ever would have gathered around a company swimming pool. So I wasn’t surprised that feature has been eliminated from this project, even if it wasn’t one of the modifications required by this body’s prior comments.

This is great and all, but the rate of development is far too slow in the DTES. There is no difference (or it's even worse) in the conditions down there since the LAP has been active.

It's not going to happen, but I would build to the maximum FSR that is practically feasible for a given site. That would mean greater heights, but that's a small price to pay to transform the DTES, which is our most historic neighbourhood, into a functional, normal neighbourhood. We have to get as many working people in there as we can. And do it fast.

More people working in the neighborhood would be great, but it still wouldn't solve the underlying issues. Another historic neighborhood like Chinatown would just have to bear more of the burden.

I meant more people living there that have jobs and are not addicts. If functional people greatly outnumber the disfunctional, it will make a difference. New businesses will set up. It will be far less hospitable for addicts.

Very nice. That ugly parkade structure has to go. I only lament the loss of small businesses at the current CRUs. The new office building should incorporate new CRUs too.

It does. There are three: one on Seymour, a shallow one in the middle of the Pender facade, and a deeper one on the western end. The office lobby is on the corner.

Thanks, and that is good news. Not sure if the three can encourage small businesses to return though.

The Chinatown Foundation's big Health Centre/non-market housing building at 58 W Hastings is getting a shiny (apparently new) red tower crane today.

Green grass, some trees and monkey bars would have done much better here and would have offered something for people in the area. What they are now building will only warrant one visit and you have seen it. Some great canopies to pitch a tent under.

no, this park, like many things being built these days are being influenced and done so for the Instagram age, a place that shows up in pics as the it spot. Similar to how putting coloured coverings on the windows at a shopping mall in Burnaby drew crowds to pose for pictures.

the real question is, though, should we be building city parks for instagram likes? it is one thing if a private company does that, but for an asset/amenity for the general public, it doesn't seem like it really serves the general public.

We had this discussion few pages back, mixed feelings. Apparently lots of folks love it.

I think this speaks to our priorities, and I don't think how Insta worthy something is should be used as a measure of success.

We spent a lot of money on a park with a bridge to nowhere because Instagram.
