The company that did the East Line to Millwoods is a joke. I can assure you that the West line will be done minus many problems and delays that we see with the Millwoods line.

We did work on an abandoned bldg, by 75th St, where they are going to tun it into t a strip mall, and we noticed that the new pedestrian walkway, on of the construction workers had poured asphalt over a plastic bucket, and just left it there. Now it's pretty much caked on. I can't even make shit like this up.

It depends how you define ROW. The existing LRT from Clareview to Century Park has a dedicated route and is not stopped by traffic signals. The newer tramway mingles with street traffic (q.v. Bonnie Doon) and obeys signals.

It's going to cause a snarl and that's almost the intention.

I attended three consultation sessions and focused specifically on the section of the route between 121 St and 142 St. We were told each time that the route and the configuration were always in draft form and that issues such as running a streetcar down the middle of the road and removing car lanes were never intended to be permanent fixtures in the design.

The Glenora stop is especially weird. An LRT requires density to operate efficiently and that's what you see at most stops along each route. But Glenora has a lot of development restrictions so there's going to be a stand-alone stop in the midst of a lot of single-family dwellings. Sure, there's a school, but that accounts for perhaps four stops per day.

I've spoken to a few property owners there and they assure me that my concerns about density there are unfounded. I think they're dreaming. Once the route and the stop is chiseled in stone then the rezoning and property development will follow.

Not a whole lot different than Avonmore stop. People are usually more willing to walk farther to a train stop than a bus stop so it increases the catchment area. Avonmore and north Glenora are fairly compact urban neighbourhoods.

Millbourne-Woodvale will be a little odd because of the larger suburban lots surrounding it and will rely more on bus connections for ridership.

There'll be some signal prioritization for Valley Line. They might hold the green for longer or make it come earlier to match the train.

Avonmore stop is undergoing lots of townhome development even inside the 'hoods, away from the roads, and a few applciations have popped up around the station and 83 ave for some mixed-use buildings!

Has TransEd and the City really revealed the method / degree of signal priority yet. I understand still it's supposed to be minimal, like the older lines having you wait at stations n such.

The signals they currently have running in Strathearn are just cycling with the lights. If they don't prioritize the train and have it stopping along 95ave...what have they built.
The portion from south of 82 Ave to north of the old traffic circle is going to be something.

ETS returns to full service with winter service changes starting November 28
November 23, 2021

On Sunday, November 28, ETS will return to full service and implement its annual winter service changes that reflect typical changes in ridership, including the holiday period in late December. These service changes further support a vibrant and safe city, along with the City’s commitment to delivering safe, convenient and reliable transportation that connects Edmontonians to the places they need and want to go.

Return to Full Service
As part of the regular winter service changes this year, ETS will resume full service on all routes. ETS is thankful for transit riders’ patience as bus schedules were temporarily adjusted in early November due to workforce availability and vaccine policy requirements. The health and safety of staff and riders are a top priority and ETS continues to take the steps necessary to keep riders safe and the services they rely on running as smoothly and safely as possible.

Notable Route Adjustments
Several routes and schedules are adjusted to meet typical ridership changes throughout the year, as well as feedback gathered from transit riders since the implementation of the bus network redesign in April. A portion of Route 519 is being adjusted to better serve residents in communities adjacent to Ellerslie Road and 66 Street. This change will provide better coverage and reduce walking distances for those accessing neighbourhoods along these roads. Route 111 is also being adjusted to provide improved access to the Kingsway Mall entrance from both directions.

Riders can expect a return to regular routings for several bus routes traveling on Jasper Avenue now that construction detours have ended. Route 701, which connects the Kingsway/Royal Alex and Southgate transit centres, also returns to its regular routing with work on the Duggan Bridge on Saskatchewan Drive completed.

Transit riders plan their trips using the third-party Transit app, Google Maps, edmonton.ca/transit or by calling 311.

Stony Plain Road Shuttle Service
Starting November 29, ETS will provide bus service on Stony Plain Road between Jasper Place Transit Centre and Unity Square at 116 Street and 104 Avenue. To start, a shuttle (a DATS vehicle with DATS markings removed) will run every 60 minutes, seven days a week and provide consistent, reliable temporary service for riders during Valley Line West construction. Due to limited seating on the shuttle, transit riders, who are able, are asked to use routes on 102 Avenue, 107 Avenue, 116 Street and 142 Street so that seniors and those with mobility needs can access the shuttle.

Transit riders are appreciated for their patience and understanding, and can share their thoughts about what is working and what can be improved at edmonton.ca/BusNetworkFeedback.

Prairie Sky Gondola

Doppelmayr visited Prairie Sky Gondola team last week.

It was a real honour to host Sebi Lueoend from Doppelmayr - Garaventa Company Official head office in Switzerland as well as Doppelmayr Canada's CEO Luc Guy and Brent Carmichael from the Doppelmayr Kelowna team.

It took us two hours to walk the 2.5 km alignment, showing Doppelmayr where all the stations would be and which communities would be involved.

The only concern I have about the gondola is the capacity and the feasibility of increasing capacity. I think from a city perspective we would want to future proof the capacity capability of the system to ensure we can grow demand for real commuter purposes - not simply for tourists particularly if the company fails and the City wishes to assume control and operation.

From the Doppelmayr website I see some systems and cabins have a capacity of 4000 persons an hour, some for 2000 and some with much less. The Prairie website sates the cars will be an Omega V, with seating that appears about 10 persons per cabin (https://youtu.be/vTsTlLdbxrQ?list=TLGGCrQLoLJkVFMyMzExMjAyMQ). I do not see anywhere on the Prairie website what the proposed initial capacity is at full loads. Does anyone have any insight on this?

Hmm definitely half as small as I thought they would be. I was picturing I guess more like the Grouse Mountain's Garaventa Red Skyride but less utilitarian looking.

Grouse Mountain only has the two cars and they go back and forth on their own cable way, departing every 15 minutes for a capacity of 400 passengers per direction per hour. Prairie Sky would have many cars providing continuous service much like a ski resort.

Understand, just pictured something... roomier for a stroller, standing and sitting, etc. Maybe they're bigger in person / when in use.

So they're not doing substantial gondolas like Peak to Peak?

What's the point of it all, then?

Would you prefer an A380 once a day or 50 Q400s?

Frequency is more important than cabin size, but I suspect there will be a few 'feature' units that can be used for special events, corporate use and the like.

Still haven't figured out the point of the gondola, nor how it will make money (or even break even), or how the claims that it won't involve any tax dollars, or major concessions and freeland from the city.

This thread is about public transit, not a tourist gimmick...

Various work (3rd party) is ongoing to better establish the business case, ridership, expectations, requirements and to ensure key stakeholders/partners will be reasonably satisfied with any risk or exposure.

It's not there yet but getting closer.

The only thing I can find is this tweet:

"Signal priority will be given to trains over vehicles at crossings, similar to ETS buses. Emergency vehicles will take priority over public transit at all times."

I'd love to see fare integration with ETS on the Gondola but that would involve some sort of subsidy for sure. I work downtown and love the prospect of heading to Whyte Ave for lunch. And with connections for residents along North Sask Dr, the power plant for the river valley system and also Kinsmen pool just across the river, Rossdale Flats, I definitely can see it being used by the everyday Edmontonian.
