even worse, this proj appears to have been cancelled.

Even before the pandemic, the colburn didn't exactly have donations pouring in to fund its 3rd expansion. But with covid & LA's, the US's & world's economy on shaky ground, this is even more of a distant dream:

Along with the block across from disney hall, the land at 1st, Olive & Hill has long bothered me too.

meanwhile, I notice that the old taco house #1 stand on nearby Hill st north of 4th is also still standing....the demo permit issued for it at the start of the year is no longer being acted upon by the property owner. How come?

Less excuse for that than the colburn being cancelled, the olympia proj remaining on hold & the oceanwide proj on Fig still unfinished.

I was in the area last week and shot these pics of the new Sixth Street Bridge. Even my kids, who don't pay attention to anything, ask about all the arches every time we drive under it...

My 10 year old daughter did not exactly enjoy traipsing around the neighborhood under the bridge to get the photos, but she does think 'it's really neat looking'. I made it up to her later in the day by taking her up to the lobby of the Intercontinental so she could overlook the city.

The air quality was absolutely dismal for taking pictures, but we don't see too many updates on this here.

Brookfield is going to make a hell of an impact from the 110:

Los Angeles Is Gearing Up to Ban Wood-Frame Construction. Renters Will Soon Pay the Price.

https://www.pacificresearch.org/los-ange...ruction-renters-will-soon-pay-the-price/

Does anyone know if this is as bad as it sounds? Will it ban 5 over 1s? And if that is what it would do, does anyone know if it has a chance of passing?

Seems horrible if so.

This is interesting... considering that Type-3 mid-rise wood-frame-over-concrete-podium construction; 5-over-1's originated in Los Angeles in the late 1990s Little Tokyo, then spread throughout North America... and its also interesting timing as Los Angeles recently started construction on one of its first uses of Mass Timber in a commercial building at Encore Hollywood 6344 Fountain Ave.

I wonder what life-claiming fire data they are using to make this case as I dont know of any major Type 3 fire disasters in Los Angeles, unless they are using the arson fire of Geoff Palmer's under construction Da Vinci apartments downtown which didn't yet have its fire systems in place... but I can point to the major fire in the steel frame AON Center (First Interstate Tower)... But then we might be talking about the influence this same group might have on keeping LA's uniquely wide concrete tower cores in place if it is/was ever questioned.

I'd say, do not underestimate this group and the influence they can have on these codes and the ability to spin events like the Da Vinci fire as a life threatening fire risk over what was essentially a security/trespassing issue in an active construction site
Time to bring out THE CORE LINK again while we are addressing building codes in the conversation with the city leaders of what could truly make a difference in safety, housing affordability, and reduction in materials use & climate change

Below is a picture from The Core Link above comparing Onni Residential High Rise cores in earthquake prone Vancouver and Los Angeles
Untitled by Hugh B, on Flickr

Thanks for the update of the bridge PLINKO! Looks great and your daughter's remarks; I consider, a harbinger for the iconic status that this bridge will bring to LA and the River... especially that people who have no interest in buildings and construction will find it draws their eye

Fire District No. 1 is in DTLA,

DTLA allows Type 3 construction,

Expanding FD1 requirements to the rest of the city wouldn't ban Type 3 construction.

According to the comments in this UrbanizeLA article, FD1 bans Type 4 and Type 5 construction.

Just some nuance here - Fire District 1 does not prohibit wood framed construction, it prohibits Type V construction (typical of podium/wrap construction up to 5-6 stories tall) and Type IV, which includes Mass Timber. Type III construction, which is the construction type of the 7 story podium stuff you see around town, would still be allowed.

I still think this is a dumb motion, but it's not quite as bad as the headline would appear.

Ah, thanks for the clarification that it revolves around Type IV & V construction and supplying the receipts. The Pacific Research article posted earlier today didn't mention what Type construction it applied to. This just highlights the work that still gets to be done around the myths of wood and fire safety in LA's building codes

Banning the repulsive 5 over 1s wouldn’t be such a bad thing in terms of aesthetics. But the consequences are hard to predict. Sure, less housing could be build. But I can see the possibility of a high-rise explosing because forcing property developers to use steel forces them to build more stories to make it worth it.

The consequences of banning the most common housing type in the middle of a housing crisis would appear to be very predictable.

Thanks. Final question, did they vary the color of the light, for example green on St. Patrick's Day, or was it just one color? And I sure hope they turn the beacon back on. You are my eyes in L.A. sopas ej. I was born in Pasadena, lived in L.A. until 1988. But I still identify as an Angelino.

I've traveled widely throughout Mexico, Central and South America and wooden structures are very to find down there. Concrete all the way! They certainly don't need a lot of Fire stations down there!

I really think such an exciting city as L.A. deserved better than this bridge design. Couldn't they have coughed up a few million more and hired Calatrava to design it? Anything Calatrava gets built becomes an instant tourist attraction and I don't see that happening with this bridge design.
Very ho-hum in my opinion.

Short answer... We the community chose this design. Calatrava came up early in 2012 on and there were numerous proposals put forth for community input. This design was the winner. We went with local architect Michael Maltzman and HNTB.

At least a lot of power poles & lines aren't all over the LA river area, cluttering the views.

quite seriously, although I don't mind arguments for good design and the finer points in architecture or new devlpt, what this person is describing goes way beyond issues like the new bridge in dtla not being designed by someone like calatrava:

I can tell her politics will make various sspers feel good....so it's not like she's a timid burban person who dipped her toes in dtla for awhile & is actually a valley girl at heart.

We have a problem, people.

It's one of the biggest issues with L.A. This city tends to undercut itself when it comes to architecture and new development. I see pictures and videos of NYC and it's amazing how creative they are when it comes to development.

What on earth did you want? I love the design. I think it's fabulous and will be even more beautiful at night. Plus the park below is a much needed added bonus. Can't say much about the new boxy apartments going up everywhere but the bridge I love. And it will be a big attraction.
