Halifax had a turbo version of the malaise that afflicted Canada during the 90's. There were big cuts to the military and civil service during that era (something in the ballpark of 10,000 jobs around 1995). This seems to have contributed to a strange "we can't have nice things" culture that is just on its way out today. All the crappiness of the late 20th century or so on the one hand was very frustrating but on the other hand has created a lot of low-hanging fruit. Though I don't think all that many people appreciate the scope of vandalism of heritage there; many locals or visitors don't know what the city was like or could have been like.

(I hope things will continue and standards will go up a bit, particularly for the state of heritage buildings. A lot of the surviving ones are very stripped down compared to what they looked like originally.)

The growth in Halifax is truly mind-boggling....it's a lovely city, I hope it continues to grow while respecting it's remaining heritage.

I took this yesterday...of the 6th building to be on this site, the newest and most dense St. Lawrence Market North building thus far. There won't be any bridge linking to the main St. Lawrence Market building unlike 67 years ago...but if the quality is good, this will be a solid addition to this area:

^I really like that. Only gripe is with the blank wall/parkade entrance on the narrow side of the tower. It looks like it faces a prominent intersection. Would look better if they extended the glass around the corner and tucked the parkade entrance behind the building.

Love the huge Calgary update - unfortunately Canadian cities are no longer being updated in the City Compilation thread. Love the Toronto projects as well, the mid rise there are overshadowed both literally and figuratively by the high rises. Too bad because they are some of the best in the country right now.

A few construction pics from Victoria, a pair of mid-rise buildings (Nest and Haven) under excavation in the first pic with the new downtown firehall under construction in the background. It’s being built on part of the Mazda dealership lot - which is scheduled to move out to the burbs, after which the rest of the lot will be redeveloped with condos and rentals (rough render below, the firehall is the one with no blue colour). The fourth pic is the front of the firehall (‘affordable’ housing on top) and renders from the City intranet page of what it’ll look like.

I love that project in Victoria. I wish City Hall in Winnipeg knew about it and tried applying it as a template for new fire stations instead of the giant wastes of space that our fire halls currently are.

100% agree esquire - even if there isn’t a pressing shortage of land now in Winnipeg or whatever Canadian city is building new firehall, why not just do it right the first time and make the best use of the land? Isn’t Brian Bowman a pretty progressive mayor? Not sure about the rest of council there though.

That seems like a sketchy sidewalk for pedestrians and cyclists with with 6 bays worth of firetrucks frequently backing in. Also how is excess noise for the homes above being addressed?
