a bus service that works properly and isn't an ETS Milk run is fine.

Look at the elitism on this thread. Pure BS.

first we got some guy screaming about suburban ponzi schemes, not that's far from the truth, but downtown towers aren't much different when you get into the meat and potatoes of it, and require significant investment to upgrade infrastructure.

and the other guy who's afraid of buses... Dude, no one wants to take transit. Its why Edmonton has 90%+ of its trips in a private vehicle. You get the same undesirable elements on LRT as you do a bus.

Perhaps start a BRT thread so you don't keep unraveling this one.

78% of trips in Edmonton are by private vehicle, either as a driver or a passenger. 9% transit, remainder by active transportation.

Metro Vancouver as a whole is at 12% transit mode share, City of Vancouver 18%. Over 500,000 trips on the Skytrain system alone per day pre pandemic and that's all they can muster.

Got to see a two different systems in operation/construction while here in Mexico City. They are substantially increasing the reach of this type of mode to areas with serious topographical impacts.

Well thats a little deceiving for the Vancouver numbers. Ridership may be only 18%, but Car trips make up less than 50% of trips in the City proper before the pandemic.

The numbers don't make sense.

18% Transit
47% Private Auto
34% Car sharing
25% Walking
7% Cycling (I assume average throughout the year, since a majority of cyclists do not enjoy riding in the rain)

Everything adds up to 131% although take out the car sharing as it could count in the private auto stats and it's 97%.

I don't drive. I depend entirely on transit.

Edmonton has an adequate bus system and one LRT concept that works, one LRT concept that doesn't work well, and a new LRT that isn't actually an LRT but instead a streetcar or tram.

With the downtown densification policy fully endorsed there will likely be another 10,000 private motor vehicles originating in the downtown area within the next decade. The roadways as presently designed cannot bear that much excess traffic and especially while competing with the low-floor trams for space.

It's too late to fix these mistakes but at least we can scold those responsible at the polls provided they don't choose not to run again. Oh wait.

.....
How does that Downtown terminus work? Is it wedged in between MacDonald Drive and McDougall Hill Road? That location doesn't really connect to much.

Oh contraire.

It will connect UG directly north to Telus Plaza's food court which connects directly to the pedway system and Central station.

It will also likely be paired with a new pedestrian bridge over to the funicular.

There is a major bus stop on 101st south of Jasper as well.

On a side note, this valley line LRT from millwoods to downtown needs to get wrapped up here, for downtown to get moving again. Moving at a snails pace right towards the end of the project. I feel sorry for all those businesses affected by the downtown LRT construction over the last few years.

^Tell me about it. In the original scope/work, Downtown was supposed to be completed first. Construction = bad for business. Long term benefits great, but often we don't think enough here about how businesses are affected during construction.

The City has selected Hyundai Rotem Company as the preferred supplier for the 40 LRVs for Valley Line West. Delivery is scheduled to begin in early 2025 and they will integrate with Valley Line SE to provide a seamless ride from Lewis Farms to Millwoods and vice versa.

City names preferred proponent for Valley Line West LRVs
November 10, 2021

The City of Edmonton has selected Hyundai Rotem Company as its preferred proponent to supply 40 light-rail vehicles (LRVs) for the 14-kilometre Valley Line West LRT project.

Hyundai Rotem Company and the City will enter into final discussions, with the contract expected to be finalized by December 2, 2021. The LRVs will be delivered beginning in 2025.

“We want to thank the teams that participated in the Request for Proposal phase of procurement for LRVs for Valley Line West. We’re excited to have reached another significant project milestone,” said Brad Smid, Valley Line Director, City of Edmonton.

The City launched its procurement for LRVs in November 2020 and released its shortlist in March 2021. Eight teams provided technical submissions that met the City’s requirements with three teams being short-listed and invited to submit proposals. The teams were scored based on price and technical components, and the team with the highest overall score was chosen as the preferred proponent for LRVs. The process was overseen by a third-party fairness monitor.

The City decided to procure LRVs for Valley Line West separately from the overall design-build-partially finance contract after engaging with industry partners and reviewing the optimal risk allocation for the project. The 40 vehicles delivered by Hyundai Rotem Company will integrate with Valley Line Southeast to ensure a seamless ride between Mill Woods and Lewis Farms.

Marigold Infrastructure Partners, the contractor building Valley Line West, began construction on the project earlier this year. An economic assessment estimates that, overall, construction will generate $760 million in wages in Alberta and another $209 million throughout the rest of the country. It is expected to generate 8,800 jobs in the province and another 2,700 across Canada.

The $2.6 billion Valley Line West project has funding commitments from the Province of Alberta and the Government of Canada. It is the second phase of the Valley Line, a 27-kilometre, low-floor, urban-style LRT that will provide seamless connection between Mill Woods and Lewis Farms once complete. The first phase of the project, Valley Line Southeast, is currently under construction.
