^ That's such a cool set! I'll have to take some time and explore the area the next time I'm in town since it's been changing so fast. Surface parking lots have been pretty much eliminated.

Wow! You weren't kidding!

And it's mostly vacant and left to rot. Insane! Hopefully they manage to revitalize it. I definitely never saw any of that. Mind you Skid Row doesn't sound like the kind of place you want to visit as a tourist.

This was more of the street vibe that I saw while visiting:

Obviously much less density and street interaction.

Even just something around 750m mark would look nice. 1 Signature tower.

I doubt we'll ever see Canada get the 2nd tallest building in the world, and if we did, probably wouldn't be in Montreal.

Or maybe it was supposed to be a 2 instead of a 7. 250m would make an impact, 750ft isn't even the height of the pointy thing on 1250 René-Lévesque.

This is the Bunker Hill area. There used to be huge Victorians and nice hotels here back in the day. Then a lot of them transformed into rooming houses while others went into complete disrepair, and then there was massive demolitions/complete land clearing in the 1960s for the giant skyscrapers "urban renewal" without any thought as to pedestrians/or interaction with the street. "Nobody Walks in LA" was the mantra from the 70s/80s/90s

LA went from thriving inner city to urban exodus post war, and finally in the last 20 years the downtown is seeing a resurgence.

The amount of apartments and condos (~4,600 units) currently under construction (w/31,000 units proposed) is impressive. In a decade I suspect the change to DTLA will be amazing.

LA has such a wide range of architecture it's easy to see how it has been used as a double for other areas for so many years.

Seeing the streetviews reminded me of possibly the best movie to feature this side of LA that wasn't film noire. Predator 2 was set in LA and it almost felt like Manhattan in areas. I love this classic scene with the Eastern Columbia building for example:

What I liked was that it wasn't doubling for another city. It was authentically LA. They also had scenes in the subway, a giant cemetery and in alleyways and brick warehouses all throughout the area.

Some of the locations:

Posted these on the LRT u/c thread, but I thought I could post them here as well.

From another City of Ottawa Stage 2 update. Tunney's to Lincoln Fields will have some of the highest urban TOD along the Confederation Line, and we're already seeing it with about 12 new or u/c buildings and a dozen+ proposed or approved.

Looking west from Dominion "Station" in Westboro. Layers from near to far would be Westboro, Tunney's and the traditional Downtown.

Looking east from the Sir John A. Parkway near Cleary Avenue, towards Westboro and Downtown.

Looking west from above Cleary and Richmond down the u/c Byron tunnel.

That's because Montreal is massive, much much bigger than places like Vancouver or Calgary.

Agreed. Vancouver proper has a very dense feel with endless tall buildings in every direction but drops off once you enter the mainland. Calgary falls off once you leave the Beltline and downtown. Montreal seems to go on forever in every direction with dense streetwall 3 story buildings. Beautiful church spires can be seen everywhere. Not sure how an aerial photo led to this discussion. Montreal is not a two dimensional skyline city. It is an OG North American metropolis.

I love Montreal. Great city.

Maybe I'll look for jobs there.

Indeed, LA is way more diverse than most outsiders realize. And I like when LA shows itself in TV/movies too instead of as a stand in.
I'll have to re-watch Predator 2

My brother used to live in LA county (San Gabriel Valley) so I've taken both the light rail (L line) to downtown and used the subway (2019). When exiting at Pershing Square it truly felt like a big city with (given LA's reputation) a surprising amount of pedestrians.

The Eastern building with its turquoise blue and art deco design w/clock tower has been a favourite of mine for a while. The units in that building are quite large and expensive. Johnny Depp apparently used to live there.
