Wow. It's been awhile since a rendering put me to sleep. That thing is practically sleeping drugs, personified.

Behind OLD MEC HQ/now EA. Fencing up but no construction visible.

Next door behind Tesla delivery centre where back of building was shaved off and new wall put in place.

And next door again. Current status. They are going to leave outside parking structure intact, drill some holes and put up columns? Or demolish and build back same?

Good question.
I would think that they'd need a wider opening than just the column width.

In the first one here you can see the beginnings of the trench where the tunnel is being formed. Cool.

After Great Northern Way station's structure is finished and buried, it would be a great opportunity to reorganize the layout of the surface. For example, connect the E 1st Avenue roads together instead of a separated intersection as it previously was.

Thanks for all the pics!

There's a plan for the area - check here:

The nature of the opposition is pretty clear:

Obviously... if you live in the area, you may feel it would be a waste to you... the real benefits is to connecting students in UBC with the rest of the system.. or even making commuting to UBC from Surrey a viable reality.

It seems whenever someone says "it's a waste of money" it's code for "I don't think I would use it or need it personally, therefore it's a useless project.

Sounds like NIMBy... but without details, hard to say.

Quote:
• Concern that the ridership of the line would not be high enough to warrant the cost to the public (64)
Uh-huh... see point 1.

Quote:
• Opposition to densification along the alignment, including concerns about the impacts this would have on property taxes and quality of life in existing neighbourhood (32)
Yep... the NIMBY is real. This is the real issue. Keep the unwashed masses out of my neighbourhood. The reality is that it would be a massive INCREASE in the quality of life for anyone along the entire corridor, assuming they have ever taken a train in their life.

I don't want to minimize their issues, but from the summaries... it doesn't seem that there's anything really other than self-centered arguments there.

It would absolutely increase the quality of life in those areas because it will take cars off the road.

More specifically, less congestion on the road when it comes to moving people who are going to and/or from UBC and/or Central Broadway.

You nailed it here.

The benefit to the general public far outweighs whatever concerns people in this neighbourhood have. They truly are the 'pulling the ladder up from behind them' stereotype.

In a housing/affordability crisis like we experiencing today, I have zero sympathy for people like this. Trying to block densification and rapid transit along Broadway is ridiculous.

Eh, not really.
Induced demand happens when you expand public transport as much as when you build freeways.
Both do the same thing of getting cars off the road, so they be filled up w/ new ones.
