I'm pretty sure we have the technology these days to position utilities and obstacles in the path of the TBM and have either moved them or planned the alignment around them.

It looks like the tunnel will just clip the corner of this property, and likely at a considerable depth due to the steep gradient between east 5th avenue and Great Northern Way. The properties around Brunswick and Broadway - 8th avenue will be impacted considerably more.

This really is a weird construction period. Around Broadway and Quebec they have been "digging" for weeks, but there's not much of a hole?

Similarly at Cambie and Broadway that pile/drill has been going all day every day for weeks... what exactly are they doing?

Similar was happening at Gilmore Place in Burnaby, very slow start and now we see how big the hole is...

As others have said, they're installing the piles along the two edges, that will then have steel girders across the street and a temporary road deck on top. Then they'll dig the station boxes out underneath. They're doing the same for all the stations down Broadway. It's similar to the new St Paul's hole, where they're installing a perimeter ring of rotary piles and then digging out inside the piled box.

I was just skimming through the UBC section summary report (Buzzer Blog link to the pdf - you really only need to go through about the first 20 pages). It shows not a lot of opposition vs support - so while the 'on-street tram / LRT is more than enough' crowd may be quite vocal, there's not as many of them as they'd like to appear to be.

Don't think it was ever a controversy - spend any reasonable amount of time listening to the "No" argument, you'll find it's mostly just the same four loudmouths over and over again.

Interestingly, 15-27% of the station placement comments (page 16) were about keeping the Point Grey one at Sasamat.

i think anyone without a vested interest knows a SkyTrain subway extension is the best way.

i don't know why those guys have vested interests in LRT though... i do find it odd they literally hate SkyTrain that much. like what happened there. seems so weird.

Simple answer : People who like LRT are "intellectuals" - which means they like to dwell on nuances while missing the whole point.

You are supposed to be very impressed with their mind power and their carefully positioned arguments showing how much smarter they are than anyone else.

Of course, every "half a solution" solution falls on its rear end in a short period of time. By that time, people have forgotten the intellectual idiots who came up with the half solution and must now pay the whole shot again to fix the problem that was never fixed with the intellectual solution.

And don't fantasize about just pressing a button and making them all disappear. Those sort of people are a feature of the human condition and no matter what, in twenty years time, there will be just as many of them and there are today.
And we will all just have endure them, as we do now.

I was just going to comment on that. What a prime location that would be perfect to complete at the same time as the new Skytrain extension.

Do you know who owns the dog park land? That seems to be a placeholder that's ripe for development as well.
