Ottawa has received its first of seven Stadler FLIRTs, the new fleet (which will run along side the existing six Alstom LINTs, two will run on the airport spur, the other four will be combined into two train sets).

Lots of O-Train updates coming out today from the City.

A few more from the 90-day east extension lookahead:

Piles of rails in the east-end. This one at Montreal, where rail isntalation has begun. Another was dropped near Place d'Orleans a few weeks ago.



Place d'Orleans Station, a major bus transfer today and will continue to serve as the main Orleans transfer post-Stage 2.

Edmonton's newest line will NOT open late Q4 of 2021 (originally scheduled to be open Q4 2020) but rather 'Q1 2022'.

Just my personal opinion but I HATE streetcars.

It’s one of the many reasons I hope the north segment of the Greenline here in Calgary will be delayed until they can do it properly (i.e. UNDER Center Street - not running on it).

A new Line 2 Stadler FLIRT, alongside one of the O-Train's original Bombardier TALENTs. The old fleet has been retired since 2013. The City has since tried and failed numerous times to sell or scrap the three DMUs. If anyone is interested, please contact the City of Ottawa. You can probably get one (or all three) for free as long as you pay for transport.

I wonder why a station at High Tech Road is necessary? It's less than 500m north of the confirmed Langstaff station.

Transit hubs are proposed at Steeles Avenue and within the Highway 7/Highway 407 corridor (Bridge Station). A station at High Tech Road would serve future communities envisioned within the Richmond Hill Centre area. Clark Station will offer riders seamless connections to the planned extension of the Viva Orange bus rapid transit line, which serves communities along Highway 7.

By having Bridge and High Tech stations at surface level, riders will be able to use the subway faster and more easily because they will not have to connect to and from deep underground platforms. Transferring from a bus, GO train, or any other type of surface-level transit will be simpler and easier at these stations. High Tech Station will reduce traffic congestion by putting the subway within walking distance for more than half of the residents expected to live in the Richmond Hill Centre area by 2041.

The line will extend further to store trains. I am guessing having a station there would make it better utilized.

Surface stations aren't nearly as expensive as underground anyway so there's not as much of a cost issue. I have a bigger problem with Cummer/Drewry since it's both underground and unnecessarily close to Finch. I'm even a little iffy on Royal Orchard and Clark since they could probably be consolidated into one at Centre or John. Suburban stations have traditionally been well over a km apart to allow higher speeds and lower construction costs. For instance, there are gaps of about 2km from York Mills to both Sheppard and Lawrence.

Can some explain? Extending the Yonge Line without twinning the tracks all the way into Downtown Toronto makes no sense to me. Do they really expect people to go north to Langstaff to go south?

There are many reasons why. RH line is not planned to go 2WAD for a while to start with.

I must agree with you on this. Some of the station choices seem raher bizarre with this extension....not only in terms of spacing but just in the way they chose some roadways over others. I see no need for a Cummer station really, unless they just want more development in the Toronto side of the extension...and also just a station by Clark/ oyal Orchard confuses me...I think John is a better match over the latter in fact, just because there's a lot that can be done with the land around there and possibilities related to strengthening transit connections in the area.

Bring the line over to the GO tracks seems unnecessary IMO. I understand that Metrolinx is really stressing accessibility and direct connections over traditional subway construction...but I don't understand why they should build out the trackage this way to curve into the railway. I'd still prefer an expansion of the subway continued right along Yonge...even if it means it'll take longer to plan out construction, and a more awkward connection to the GO station. I'm not a very big fan of expanding the subway this far north personally, but that's just me.
