Yes. And it's been getting progressively worse with rail expansion. The transit trip used to be a direct 20 minute bus ride from downtown to the airport. With the opening of Line 1, it became a 25 minute ride; O-Train from downtown to Hurdman (with its large, offset bus loop that offers no weather protection other than sparse bus shelters), and transfer to a airport-bound bus. With Stage 2, it will become this 3 train, 45 minute trip. Taxi, ridesharing or renting a car will all be far superior options.

Because of this, riders will have to transfer three times, from Line 1, which has good 3-5 minute service, to Line 2 at Bayview, west of downtown, with its 12 minute service, and again at South Keys, a suburban shopping strip mall, to catch a Line 4 train to the airport. Transfers between Line 2 and 4 are supposed to be timed well enough to avoid long wait times, but we'll see how that works in practice.

Below is a map. The green line is Line 2, Bayview to Limebank, and the Line 4, South Keys to the Airport. The City probably could have double tracked, or at least done enough to increase frequencies to 6 minutes, the existing Line 2 and extend to the airport for the same price as doubling the length of all platforms and extending all the way to Bowesville (with Limebank funded by developers and the Province).

https://ottawa.ca/en/planning-developmen...ge-2-light-rail-transit-project/overview

It demonstrates how the City's priority is serving suburbs-downtown commuters over urban residents who might use the service regularly for all day to day movements.

It could be possible to one day upgrade Line 2 enough to provide Airport-Bayview service, but interlining will never happen as the City has doubled down on high floor DMUs (convertible to EMUs), incompatible with the low-floor Line 1 Confederation.
Maybe the plan is to extend it to Hurdman to replace the existing BRT.

From Pat on Rail Fans Canada Discord.

Algonquin Station, formerly Baseline, one of the first batch of Transitway Stations in 1983. Around 2010, the City and Algonquin College demolished the original station for a new Trades building and temporary bus station, with a rail station roughed-in underground, now being completed as part of Stage 2.

The station will be the Line 1 west terminus, handling high volumes of transfers from the north-south Barrhaven Transitway (and east-west Baseline light-BRT if built). It also serves a 30,000 or so student community college, City offices, library and theatre.

Only underground station on Stage 2 alignment (but about 500 meters of 4 kilometers of tunneling).

Iris Station and Pinecrest Creek. Iris is another of the old guard Transitway stations. Very minor, serving a suburban sfh neighbourhood with no TOD potential. Pinecrest Creek was buried when the original Transitway was built but is being moved and uncovered for Stage 2.

Lots of finangling with the river.

Hope people manage to at least turn Iris area into duplexes and triplexes.

Tawatina Bridge for the new SE Valley Line LRT from Downtown to Millwoods in Edmonton.

Sonog from SSP captured this beautiful shot in the Edmonton section.

Great to see Algonquin get a proper station underground. Waiting for buses in the outdoors there is hellish in the summer and winter due to there being no cover. Just a windy, humid hellscape most of the time.

Looks good, I'm impressed. Next time I'm in town I think I'll hop on the Valley Line just to take in the views!

Davies Station in Edmonton looks great! Quite a contrast between it and the more "classic" lrt stations along the Valley Line.

For sure. They'll end up with the best post-secondary transit station in the city, though battling with Barrhaven transfers the first few years might be challenging.

thanks for that. I have been starved for Montreal-area updates (the Quebec/Montreal subforums are very quiet lately).

At one time, many of Canada's cities had streetcars. Most of them are long gone. If the governments pledged to return them all, would that help, or hinder transit and congestion in the cities? Reading up on them, many of them were not running in mixed traffic.

Here in BC many of the street car (and inter-urban) lines ended up belonging to BC Hydro and eventually BC Rail. The ones that have not been removed, have mostly been leased to CN rail with the right to run passenger traffic at some point in the future.

The Expo line in Vancouver mostly followed an old inter-urban line. The other lines are not over useful in that they don't serve many of the urban hubs of modern day.
