Asper proposal for Hydro at Portage and Main. I like the building we got, but something without the proportions of a tree stump would have been nice.

This is so nice. With the parking lot across the street soon to be filled, that lot really needs to be next.

Man, I remember all of those old arena proposals. It's interesting to consider what would have happened had a new arena been built in the 90s. Good chance that the Jets probably never would have left.

I don't know what it was about that era but at that point in the 90s it seemed like an arena was like an impossible dream. It would have been crazy to imagine back in 1998 that 15 years later we'd have a new arena with a NHL team in it and a new football stadium.

^ Forgot about that one. So many classic throwbacks! We could probably find more by scouring some of the old Winnipeg Construction threads.

Thanks, TV.

Announced yet or just something you're working on?
The only thing I recall lately was testing equipment on site a while back.

I would love to see some actual clear images of this proposal. I remember seeing this when it came out and was totally wowed. It looks so dense and big city. They have to be out there somewhere. I'd inquire if I knew who did them.

Interestingly there were were a couple of arena proposals for the Convention Centre site. First the Manitoba Gardens concept that you referenced from back in 1990 (although with the state of the office market in the early 90s it's hard to imagine that much if any of that office space would have ever actually materialized... even the Air Canada Centre in Toronto only included a little stump of an office building when it opened in 1999 whereas it would have probably been 40+ storeys tall if built more recently pre-pandemic).

Second of course was the True North Centre proposal which was originally supposed to go by the RBCCC before it was steered over to Portage Ave and ultimately built. I vaguely recall seeing renderings at the time (maybe around 1999?) of the 12,000 seat arena TNSE wanted to build there, but it didn't take long before focus shifted north and the proposed arena was enlarged.

I know there must have been a better picture shared on these boards but couldn't find it.

Except the lost Pantages & other bldgs on Rory/east Market, this late '50s plan for the area is smidge better & more akin to Waterfront Drive/Juba Park now. Still sorta wish Market went to the river
