I noticed that they have rebar and concrete equipment on site now. I suspect we'll see them start on the foundation rebar next week.

In your photo it looks like there will be a connection between this new building and Marquee Residences? By the way thank you for the constant drone updates, such a great perspective for updates on projects!

I thought there are river streams underground? Is that only a scare to let developers out back in the day? Nimby style?

This isn't really that deep, plus the streams may not cover the entire downtown.

We will find out if there is an underground stream if they start driving pilings into the ground.

Even if there is one, it's likely running through sand and gravel in a buried valley... that is, it's not going to be a cavern; something like that probably would have collapsed decades ago, and I don't believe the geology of downtown includes any karst. A stream is not a showstopper by any means, especially if the bedrock isn't too far down; the builder may just need to adapt the foundation to account for the water.

A lot of the old stream locations actually show up on the old hamilton maps if you know where to look.

I posted one a while back. Can't seem to find it!

But before people were aware of environmental impacts a lot of those water courses were filled in with whatever was on hand -- earth, wood, gravel, waste. Then successive coverings happened over the decades.

So it's an issue, but not insurmountable. I found this report (PDF) related to the LRT, which notes that the lower city bedrock is mostly Queenston shale, in some places more than 5 metres below surface grade, but that gets lower west to east. Some sites are deeper (Cathedral Park, where the eastern parts of the bridge over the 403 will be built). So there is stable footing below, it seems. But if there's water flowing, the engineering needs to account for it.

They've dug down quite a bit deeper on the northeast edge of the property along the edges of where the shoring. No pictures because it looks mostly the same, but there was a lot of crew on site today. Strange because yesterday it was deserted, as in there was nobody working on site.

I'm guessing just due to the heavy rain on Monday. I walked by in the morning and the soil was extremely wet with large pools of standing water all over.

Walking by, that looks to me like just an air vent. Not sure how that will function with the new building up against it...

Also looks like they've begun to dig two storeys deep here after all.

I didn't go by today, but are you sure? When I went by last it looked like they were just digging the exterior walls deeper for some reason.

Walked by today, looks like there is a crane base set up, and it does look like they're going down two floors, lots of trucks ready to take dirt away. Curious. It seems the went down a single floor, and then leveled it, and then went down another floor a couple weeks later. Seems odd to me, no?

Anyway, seems like we might see the crane today or later in the week. I'll go by a bit later perhaps and check out if the crane is up yet, if I can't see it from my office.

They must have poured that crane base yesterday because I walked by the site Monday and it wasn't there.
