Not sure if Ian is the permanent host, but every time I have tuned in lately it's been him.

They had another guy in there after Rex Murphy. He was OK but Ian really is in a class by himself as a host IMO.

Rex Murphy was OK for his originality and such, for a while. But eventually I found his charm started to wear thinner and thinner.

Oh yeah? I only maybe watch CBC for news 10% of the time, and I've been seeing him on national shows for at least 20 years or more. He was a fill-in anchor for Peter Mansbridge on many occasions for a very long time. As I said - going back a couple of decades at least.

I can see that.

Still, her obvious partisanship is pretty unprofessional.

I know but I just found them to be too snippy. It crossed over that line. At least when I watched.

It felt like I was watching an American election night show.

Lisa Raitt as Rick Santorum?

Gerald Butts as James Carville (minus the cool accent)?

OK, I am joking a bit.

But I did find that the no-holds-barred partisanship and blatant lack of objectivity from the host detracted from what was overall a pretty good show.

They're partisans. What do you honestly expect? Both were pretty great throughout the evening, and the NDP rep was good, too.

Funny because many Americans were saying the opposite about our coverage.

Knowing when to exit the stage is a key part of the role. Good commentators know when to do this. Not-so-good ones don't.

The quality of the CBC broadcast was definitely below that of a US election night broadcast. That's the nature of a smaller country though, they are stretched much thinner. A lot of the local coverage journalists they would go to looked like it was their first time on TV, reading off notes clearly visible, stammering, etc.

And yea, the main host showed some clear bias which wasn't cool, even if the greater broadcast was generally balanced.

In the land of the blind the one-eyed man is king.

Not sure they are the best arbiters of what good election coverage is, given the state of things in their own country.

Since I guess we were keeping tabs on this, O'Toole won fewer seats and a lower percentage of the vote than Scheer.

He's been with CBC News since the 1990s, I think.

It's not like he's the unproven new guy. He has that sense of gravitas that being a news anchor/host should have. Peter Mansbridge and Lloyd Robertson had it.

It's the 'confident airline captain' voice. It's the one the reassures passengers when it comes over the PA. It's the one that says: 'I know what I'm doing and you'll get there safely' in its tone.

Rosemary Barton isn't that voice.

The big question is this: Did he win a bigger percentage where it mattered? (read: GTA suburbs). If he didn't, that's a bad omen. If he did, there's potential.

Stephen Harper needed a couple of practice swings to get somewhere too.

CPC incumbents lost in both Markham-Unionville and Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill. They may still pick up King-Vaughan but mail-in ballots are waiting, but they pushed hard in a place like Whitby and didn't really see much return - only a percentage point or two gain in places like Vaughan and Newmarket. In the riding they did win (Thornhill), their % dropped from 54 to 50. Tough to follow up Peter Kent, I guess.

I'm not sure it's a great sign if your leader can't flip nearby ridings. The NDP managed to flip Port Moody-Coquitlam which is adjacent to Singh's Burnaby South.

That doesn't particularly bother me.

He was doing really well early on in the election period until JT pulled out all the stops with the big bad Conservative attack ads, bringing up all sorts of irrelevant almost hysterical stuff to frighten urban voters into thinking O'Toole was equivalent to the anti-Christ.

O'Toole could have done better. He could have done a better job on defining the Tory policy on assault weapons, and I think he should have just accepted JTs $10 a day daycare solution rather than coming up with a weaker plan on his own. Just those two things alone I think could have made a difference........

Rosemary Barton is extremely popular in parliamentary press circles apparently. She fits in well among both anglophones and francophones as she is very bilingual.

I don't think Singh stays on. Despite really promising polling, the party only gained one seat. Anything less than 30 seats should have been viewed as a disappointment.

Great, and that is an excellent role for her.

Not as the host in this person's opinion.

You mean as Director of Social Activities for the Parliamentary Press Gallery?

What?

'He was doing really well until his opponent outclassed and outmanouevered him politically to ensure victory.' As someone else pointed out previously, the CPC and O'Toole couldn't do anything to prevent these sorts of narratives from sticking, and it's entirely up to them to change that narrative. They couldn't. Politics is politics, and no amount of excuses can change the results on the ground. As if the Conservatives have never run an attack ad before, as if Trudeau hasn't been the target of 'nice hair, though'.

Not that he's the same leader, but Singh's trajectory is identical to Layton's in terms of vote share in their first two elections as leader. 'But Mulcair!', yes, but he squandered an incredible advantage.

Wonder if the Tories will give him another shot or kick him to the curb. They don't have many genuine leadership candidates. Lewis, maybe?

Which is funny moreso because Trudeau didn't actually acquit himself super well during this election. No slam dunks or knockout moments. Admittedly no big screw-ups either. O'Toole wasn't bad either, but wasn't outstanding.

I'd say that the Liberal presence on the ground in the GTA was the difference vis-a-vis the Conservatives.

Singh will likely stay on because I don't get the vibe of somebody itching to replace him. The NDP sticks with leaders longer during mediocre times (Alexa McDonough, anyone?). It's ironic, really. You'd think the knives would come out when being consistently terrible, but they only come out when they're kind of good (see: Mulcair).
