All of you must hate democracy or something. Why are elections only useful if they produce a change in government?

We can thank weak Provincial Conservative leadership for that. Kenney has been a blessing for the Liberal Party.

Only if the party they like wins.

On the contrary, you must hate democracy, if you are so offended by one's democratic right to be critical of an election that was called at a questionable time.

I think it is remarkable that the CPC is still outpolling the LPC by 1.8%, despite the fact that the PPC accumulated 5.2% of the vote share.

The PPC vote share is inflated by anti-vaxxers, which is purely situational. Assuming the pandemic is over the next time around (God willing), some of these votes will migrate back to the CPC.

The Liberals are in trouble.

More due to how unpopular the Pallister provincial government is here and vote splits from people's party.

They literally just won another minority government. The CPC made no gains despite their leader migrating to the centre. Surely a more troubling result for the CPC than for the LPC.

JT called the election with a 12% lead in the polls. O'Toole erased that lead, and held the CPC plurality in the vote share, and thwarted JTs plans for a majority government.

I consider that a win. JT held all the cards when the writ was dropped, and failed to deliver on it.

At the very least, JT is as much of a "loser" as O'Toole is.............

Once the dust settles, it will be interesting to see how many seats the PPC cost the Conservatives. I’m guessing at least 10 or 12.

Its not much of a democracy when the election results are already called by the cbc when the votes in the west had not even been counted and the party with the most popular support nationally has lost the election twice in a row. The 31% of Canadians who live in the west have for decades had to put up with the elections being virtually over before our votes are even counted.

Indeed.

At present, the LPC has 33 more seats than the CPC. If the PPC cost the CPC a dozen seats as you suggest, then the LPC plurality would have been cut to nine seats.

The election is won or lost in the GTA. Get used to it. The rest of Canada is sloppy seconds.

Well, as Butts put it, if you're the leader with the most seats after the election then you're probably the winner. I don't know how else you want to try and spin things but the CPC needs a deep-dive if they're planning on winning more than 120 seats in the future, but we'll probably get a leadership review from them before they get another opportunity.

Actually, JT comes out pretty decently tonight considering they're forming government again and they've been able to shed both Monsef and Alleslev, as well as their troublesome fisheries minister in Jordan. Based on these lines in Fort York it looks like they might shed Vuong, too.

Perhaps the CPC should figure out how to be competitive in the country's largest population centres.

It can be spun either way for both parties. Meanwhile, Trudeau will be PM with a new mandate to govern, even if it involves a bit more haggling with the NDP and the Bloc, than he would have liked.

Eastern Canadians aren’t going to care about the oil industry when our house is on fire and every CPC leader has the policies of an arsonist. Urban centres aren’t going to favour a party that’s hitched its wagon to a rural, bigoted base. Anti science views aren’t going to win over the majority of people during a pandemic.
I never get the whining from Prairie dwellers who have voted conservatively for literally generations. When suburban Ontario votes for Harper, they are good and when they vote for Trudeau, they are uncaring bastards?

Also, why is it that only Ontarians are routinely asked in their country to ignore their interests and put those of others first? Like I asked earlier, how many of the rest of you have ever voted based on concern about subway funding in Toronto?

I'm a believer that conservatives can win Ontario. Harper's victories are proof. They just have to deliver what voters want. I think O'Toole is perfectly positioned to win the next election.

It was always going to take more than one cycle. But really, it hurts conservative credibility when the only person pushing moderation is the leader. Consider this. If Trudeau got nuked from orbit, nobody has any doubts what agenda the Liberals would keep pushing. If O'Toole got run over by a bus, I don't think his agenda would last as long as it took to scrape him off the bus' tires.

Lol at the PPC voters who inadvertently helped JT remain in power. Lord knows they'll be kicking and screaming at JT and the LPC victory, but they'll only have themselves to blame.

Yeah, it's pretty amazing how an election can be determined by 6 provinces with about 70% of the population. Come on man, while our system isn't perfect, you have to acknowledge that is to be expected.

Then I think you need to convince 10 million more people to move to the West, or perhaps demand a change to time zones!

Hawaiians have the same complaint in the US....
