That rendering is several years old. We had discussions about it when it was first discovered floating around the internet. So it's probably a place holder.

There was recent demo at 14th & Lavaca for a project unknown. But it's zoned for only a 165' height. Before Code Next went to court and died, the site would have been upzoned and was being marketed for a tower:

I don't know if this is the best thread to ask this, but is there a list of ALL high-rises in Austin and their heights that I can find somewhere?

I've been tasked with calculating the average height of high-rises in the city. Anything above 250 ft would count as a high-rise.

That Whole Foods expansion is slick. Again, some of our best buildings barely get above the trees but are quality architecture.

New WF might be the best use of materials of any modern building in Austin. Looks like a starchitect midrise you'd see in some posh neighborhood in NYC. More, please.

This thing really does look fantastic. I feel like it has flown under the radar since it's a mid-rise building, but its already really elevating the area. It looks like we'll be seeing some more great mid-rise projects in East Austin over the next year or 2 too.

I think Springdale Green is going to be another great midrise complex in East Austin. Sitework is progressing on that one.

I was wondering where I'd seen this before, then I realized it looks very similar to the Whole Foods addition downtown.

Admiring the Curves at Gensler’s Stunning Whole Foods Office Project

https://austin.towers.net/admiring-the-curves-at-genslers-stunning-whole-foods-office-project/

It’s not often that a new low-rise building will stop us in our tracks, but here we go — the five-story office project designed by Gensler Austin as an expansion for the corporate headquarters of Whole Foods, now sitting in an advanced stage of construction at the corner of West Fifth and Bowie Streets, is shaping up to be one of the most impressive new pieces of architecture in downtown Austin. Have you seen it?

Dilapidated Congress Avenue buildings move one step closer to reconstruction

Quote:
After a yearslong saga, the owner of three run-down buildings at 907, 909 and 911 Congress Avenue will finally be able to reconstruct the buildings’ facades.

On Sept. 14, the Planning Commission overruled a decision by the Historic Landmark Commission prohibiting facade reconstruction for 909 Congress, paving the way for all three buildings to be rebuilt. The buildings, which have varying degrees of historical merit, have sat in disrepair for years after multiple preservation and redevelopment proposals fell through.

The HLC’s rationale for denying the reconstruction boiled down to preservation methods. The HLC preferred to save the 909 Congress facade without rebuilding it, even though architect Donna Carter said it would be extremely challenging to do so. At the same meeting, the commission allowed 907 Congress to move forward with reconstruction, deeming its facade not salvageable. Both buildings are historic landmarks. Because 911 Congress is not a landmark, it does not need the HLC’s approval for reconstruction.

Leah Bojo, representing the owner, said a tower similar to those proposed in the past is still in the works. But there are no concrete plans yet, “because we have been waiting to make sure we can go forward with the (facade reconstruction),” she said. Any tower proposal would stop by the HLC again before receiving final approval. Because the site is constrained by the Capitol Dominance Overlay, the tower could only be about 200 feet tall.

I've said it before, they don't all have to be tall to be nice, and this one is very nice.

62-64 East Ave is for sale on Loop Net. This has been the site of three hotel proposals over the past several years - Rainey Hotel, Kimber Modern, Ladybird.

90 Feet of Housing in Old West Austin Sounds Like a Good Start

https://austin.towers.net/90-feet-of-housing-in-old-west-austin-sounds-like-a-good-start/

At its meeting earlier this week, the City of Austin’s Planning Commission voted to postpone a rezoning item on its agenda for further discussion next month, allowing the applicant further time to discuss the case with the neighborhood in question — Old West Austin, a part of town not known for its intensity of growth compared to almost anywhere else this close to downtown. Still, there’s a lot of potential for infill development along the corridors of West Fifth and Sixth Streets in this area, especially if you don’t think self-storage buildings do much for the ambiance around here.
