Fair. If AC doesn't come back and UA doesn't increase frequency then I could see WS adding SFO year round and maybe increasing service to both cities.

I don't get it either. I guess AC thinks more people wanna go to Europe as they have 7 weekly planned (4x FRA / 3x LHR) in September but only a whole 3 weekly to any point in the US?

I guess we have to wait until they completely rebuild YVR before we start seeing the likes of LAX return.

As for IAH, at this point I see UA resuming it first. Not sure about SFO.

I found 2 daily ORD flights and 1 daily PHX flight on AA starting May and April 2022 respectively. Any idea if both are seasonal or if they're year-round? There hasn't really been anything announcing these routes (besides the pre-pandemic seasonal ORD service). This might be a stupid assumption but since ORD is seasonal and starts later than PHX (by only over a month) maybe PHX is year-round? Although both are probably seasonal.

Yeah, AA currently has 5 daily flights planned in 2022 with 2x DFW / ORD and 1x PHX.

ORD is probably back to seasonal, it was originally extended to year-round just before COVID. PHX was announced/restored last winter, so it could end up being a year-round route.

---

Also in the OAG AS appears to have moved up its resumption to November 4 (same day as WS launch) but flights not bookable yet.

DL has also mainlined one of its MSP flights in September too.

The decision could also be driven by high demand for air cargo. Europe revenue is going to be a combination of cargo and passenger. US revenue is going to just be passenger.

That's a fair point, but it still odd but I guess I'm no network planning expert.

Looks like in October, AC has now pushed PHX to daily. But still nothing else. LAX, EWR, IAH, PDX, LAS and SFO all still showing in November for now.

I don't know if this is because of the pandemic but the YDQ loads on WS look pretty abysmal. Does anyone see it lasting? I would think something to YCG or maybe something even in Prince Albert would work better. YDQ is right in between YXJ and YQU both with a total of 7 daily flights (pre and post pandemic).

AC wants to get the 3 main hubs up and running before anything else. YYC will always be one step behind in that regard. If you notice over at the 3 main hubs, a lot of the US flying, even the short 1-2 hour hops out in the northeast, are on mainline aircraft, and not on Jazz. AC needs to fill these bigger planes, so they rather you connect at the main hubs.

Not a good sign. Especially when you compare it to YUL-NRT which is still bookable next year.

Okay, but wouldn't that strategy also apply to long-haul Transatlantic flying? AC currently has 3x weekly YYC-LHR planned in September, and they haven't hit daily service at YUL yet. Couple that with 4x weekly to FRA, and AC will have seven weekly flights to Europe, compared to just 3 weekly to a single point in the US.

I guess I never would have imagined AC ever having more service to Europe than any point in the US combined.

At this point, WS will likely be back to pre-COVID level service on several routes (like LAS, LAX, ATL, PHX) before AC restores anything else.

^ the long haul to Europe is two fold.

1. AC needs to keep their widebodies flying. There’s only so many routes they can profitably fly out of the main 3 hubs and they’re already scraping the bottom of the barrel (Ex. YUL-HNL). China is restricting foreign carriers, and Australia and India are no go’s, which doesn’t help.
2. Cargo demand becomes a factor, and cargo - unlike ppl from YEG - doesn’t complain where the stopover is.

This is correct. Walking from WestJet check in to drop bags all the way to E95 to catch your flight is a bunch of BS.

Especially true if your destination is YEG, feels like a walk on the QE2 would be shorter.

Interestingly AC has really cranked up the widebody trans-con domestic in August? 5-6 widebodies a day, 4-5 to YYZ and 1 to YUL.

My last 789 was completely full.

Feeding the main hubs. And proof they need to find routes for their widebodies.

I think a Cessna Citation X could get you from YYC to YEG in "No Time Flat"
That would be a neat ride.

1. Huge demand right now for domestic travel. Very little demand for transborder or international.
2. AC retired most of the Airbus narrowbody fleet and now has pilots getting trained on the max8. The widebody domestic flights are filling in fir the lack of pilots on max8.
3. AC needs cash injection to restart normal operations. Dreamliner have lowest cost per mile if the airplane can be filled, points 1&2 fill the airplane.
