Robson Square has been under some kind of construction ever since I moved here. I have to say that it has improved as all those temporary installations were a joke. Even now the tables and chairs look so cheap and are all over the place. I wonder how many have been taken with them by the countless homeless?

I am also sorry to say, but the amount of stuff on the VAG stairs is starting to look like a garbage dump from afar. I wonder which city department will ever dare to remove any of it, so we might be stuck with a permanent installation of random junk.

Even if what you say is true, a good City will push the owner to get things done right, or fines would be meted out. Obviously the City is not up to the mark: not even close, and we can always count on you to defend them.

However, those concrete blocks are definitely part of the work on the plaza, and they just leave them half-done. That's the true legacy of what Vancouver has become.

Maybe instead of only seeing the negative, we should look at this as providing a timely opportunity. It seems to me, this could be a proper location for a permanent memorial for the victims of residential schools.

Anyone know anything about the construction now taking place along Hornby Street and the west side of the main VAG building? They removed the red awning, sidewalk, bike lane and surrounding landscape. They reduced Hornby to a single lane and traffic is a nightmare during peak hours.

I thought it was water main related but they call it transportation upgrades until November.

It looked like it was initially a watermain replacement (when they closed the block entirely earlier in the summer), but yeah perhaps they're improving the pickup/dropoff area adjacent to the VAG entrance.

I know the City is attempting to coordinate upgrades in an effort to 'dig up the street only once' - the Haro St project is another example of that.

No, it's the way things work in Canada in terms of development by 'higher levels' of government. There's a hierarchy. Federal Government at the top - which is why that Federal military building over by Burrard Bridge doesn't have a development permit. They don't have to get one. Provincial Government is similar - which is why those huge electronic billboards outside BC Place aren't permitted under City of Vancouver regulations, but the Provincial government of the day built them anyway. Indian Reserves are like the Feds - which is why there are billboards by the Burrard Bridge, soon to be replaced by Sen̓áḵw won't have any City permits.

It's nothing to do with 'expectations' - it's reality.

I'm saying there's three levels of government with different responsibilities, just like we all learned in school, so don't expect Vancouver to act like a dictatorial Asian city-state.

Agree with the above - the phrase we learn in school is that municipalities are 'creatures of the province.' There's very little in the way of upward bargaining done by cities in Canada.

The entire Robson street looks like something out of a 3rd world country - painted Jersey barriers, dilapidated "pocket parks" and "patios", drunken hobos literally rolling on the ground and a never ending rotation of closed stores. We just need a couple of guys at VAG with machine guns standing in front of a barrel on fire to complete the look.

I'd love to see some renders (if there are any) of what the completed projected will look like, especially long the Hornby Street side of it. As pointed out out, it looks pretty rough & ready as is. A touch of elegance wouldn't hurt it any, but then, that would be "eurocentric," as I understand it.

The newer "No overhang" bylaw applies here since this is no Wesbank project. So yeah, probably gone for good.
