I've been cutting down on fried food for the past several years, so when Los Angeles-based Howlin' Ray's and Dave's Hot Chicken opened up, I never bothered trying it, though I know that Howlin' Ray's had long lines when it first opened, and they'll be opening another location up soon closer to me in Pasadena, and Dave's Hot Chicken will be opening up a location near my work... so those are two Nashville hot chicken places I know of in the LA area. I'm willing to try them, I suppose.

Has anyone here had Howlin' Ray's and/or Dave's Hot Chicken?

I'm going to have to try these delicious looking sandwiches. I'll report back afterwards!

Yeah, the picture of the sandwich I posted is from a place in Chicago (Budlong Hot Chicken) that also does the more traditional serving of thigh and drumstick on toast with pickles but I've never had it because slaw.

You could slather up an old brown shoe with slaw and there's still a decent chance that I'll order it.

When the choice is slaw or no slaw, I always go slaw.

Maybe I need to order the traditional nashville style one time, just to say I've tried it.

But that sandwich is just so goddamn motherfuckin' good! Did I mention that it comes with slaw?

As for jmecklenborg's nonsense, I think I can safely speak for the vast majority of the forum in saying that his thoughts and opinions re: Nashville are best disregarded.

He clearly has some kind of stick up his ass regarding the city, and his postings in this thread thus far come across as little more than the ax-grindings of the butt-hurt.

I will never forget the day that I discovered that cole slaw could be tangy and crisp, rather than milky and mushy. Since that day, I have loved cole slaw with a passion.

I hate most coleslaw as well especially the milky and mushy kind. A burger joint named the Dog Haus has a burger (The Mensch) that has coleslaw and pastrami on it and it’s the crispy kind. They also have fries with chili and coleslaw on top that is good too. Their are a few around the LA area, you should check it out, they also serve liquor and have a happy hour.

It looks good I wouldn’t mind trying it but only if it’s the breast, I hate thighs, and just dark meat period.

It does look/sound really goddamn motherfuckin good! Parson's (which now oddly enough has a restaurant in Nashville as well) has my favorite hot chicken I've had in Chicago so far, but I'll have to add Budlong to my list for sure. And to be clear, I'm not even saying the original version is superior. I just posted that to sort of show how far it has come, I guess. From lowly, ignored, utility 'poor people' food to something that is now dressed up (relatively speaking anyway) and highly regarded by folks of all classes. Now, if it ever gets to the point where there is caviar and morel mushrooms being added to it, then we can maybe say we need to reign it in a bit. Either way, it's a true American success story!

Haha that's fair, and truthfully, it's not that I'm even trying to disregard his experiences and opinions on the subject. I'm just attempting to get across to him that his experiences are not gospel and do not trump or erase the experiences of others... I am clearly failing at that. lol

Yeah, I'd never tell my grandma this, but I am 100% in the vinegar based slaw camp too.

Not many in Michigan called it Detroit style before because it was just the regular pizza we all ate and grew up with and thought was just normal.

Outsiders discovered it and now it's appropriately named. Also it is NOT a deep dish type pizza.

Oh really? I like chicken thighs and dark meat---I think that's where most of the flavor is.

Now chicken gristle... I can understand not liking gristle---my partner won't eat it; it's not my favorite, but I'll eat it if it's not easy to separate from the rest of the chicken meat. I'll just pop the whole thing in my mouth and not think about it while I chew and swallow it.

Oh yes, I long ago discovered that coleslaw can be tangy and crisp; I really like that version better.

Kind of like the potato salads without mayo, like German potato salad, which I think is oil and vinegar based, and there's the kind of potato salad that is mustard-based.

Yummy!

Yes--good call on the potato salad, which really is delicious when it is vinegar or mustard based. Like coleslaw, I grew up with the mushy dairy version and didn't like it.

For anyone who has had Nashville hot chicken sandwiches, how does it compare to the existing chain chicken sandwiches like Popeyes, Chick-Fil-A, PDQ, etc? Is it spicy with mixed seasoning or is the sauce or spice they use for it similar to Buffalo hot sauce? I think I may have had Nashville hot chicken one time at a local joint near Chattanooga but I did not like it since it was too much like a Buffalo sauce chicken sandwich.

Good question; I think that's what also made me hesitant to try Nashville hot chicken because to me it looks like Buffalo wings/Buffalo chicken, which I'll honestly say, I don't care for. I find it too sour.

Yeah, that's my question as well. I don't want to eat a chicken sandwich covered in Buffalo sauce.

I'm no expert on the style, but the place by me that claims to make "authentic" nashville hot chicken uses a spice paste on the chicken that is thicker and richer in flavor than your typical buffalo sauce, which tends to be more runny and vinegary/sour.

I LOVE Nashville hot chicken and Buffalo wings!

I also LOVE Cincy chili and Detroit-style pizza!

I also LOVE food!!!!!!!!!

I've been going to Howlin since it was a truck 5 or 6 years ago. Greatest sandwich of all time. I get it hot (2 levels below howlin plus which is crazy). There's a reason why they had hours long lines
