Pretty much all projects eventually get done, it's how they get done.
TransEd didn't do my neighbourhood any favors with their hap hazard executing.

So while they're won't be anything to complain about after they drug it on the extra year and some, there will be lots to lament with how they got there and the mess they left for years on end.

Hopefully the COE learns something too, about putting in interim milestones, penalties or other contract mechanisms to have the contractor get finished in a timely fashion. Strathearn is not the only community that suffered through a contract that accepts everything being paced to the longest path.

Well it's actual a serious issue, see the above pictures of 102ave Downtown where it's been a disrupted mess of incomplete work for years, only to still have it incomplete 7+months past the original promised finish date.

The Valley Line LRT’s expansion into southeast Edmonton is taking another step forward this week.

The Valley Line Southeast has moved into the testing and commissioning phase, which will see the line go through a series of tests in the Strathearn area to ensure safety systems are working properly.

This will be the first time residents will be able to see the Light Rail Vehicles (LRVs) in their neighbourhood and witness how the low-floor train system works. Two LRVs will be part of the testing; they will be staged at the Strathearn LRT stop along 95 Avenue between 87 and 89 streets.

TransEd, the public-private partner building the 13-kilometre line from Mill Woods to downtown, said testing will take place on the rail line from the Strathearn stop, along Connors Road and to the Muttart stop.

This section of the Valley Line has the steepest track, down Connor’s Hill, so testing will be done on the brakes, as well as rescuing and towing cars.

Testing will take place intermittently over the next two weeks, between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., according to TransEd.

Delayed Valley Line LRT pedestrian bridge across the river not expected to open before snow hits

There will likely be snow on the ground before residents can once again cross the North Saskatchewan River from Cloverdale on the long-delayed Valley Line Southeast LRT pedestrian bridge.

The pedestrian crossing under the new $391-million Tawatinâ Bridge was supposed to be complete by May 2019, but that deadline went off track when a car-sized concrete slab was found in the river during bridge construction. In an update to Postmedia, TransEd communications manager Dallas Lindskoog said the river crossing should open in line with LRT service, and maybe even a bit before.

There isn’t a set timeline for opening the 13 km line, but Lindskoog said the team is working toward getting the line ready by the end of the year, about one year after the initial opening plan of December 2020.

Work on the pedestrian crossing is going well, with the above LRT bridge already complete, but Lindskoog said it won’t open until all the surrounding trail and landscaping work is complete and the crews need as many nice days as possible to get the job done before winter hits.

“It may happen before service commencement, but if it does it will be in snowy conditions and that’s because we need every nice day that we’ve got to finish the landscaping and the restoration of those parks on both sides all summer long,” Lindskoog said. “Once the trails are built we have to do significant landscaping planning and we have to keep it closed until all the work is done.”

South-side Ward 8 Coun. Ben Henderson said his constituents have been waiting a long time for both the bridge and the line and are excited to see it nearing completion. The previous Cloverdale footbridge was closed in December 2016 to allow for construction to begin.

“It would have been lovely to have it open by now, but I think the most important thing is getting it open period and hopefully this will be the last summer without it,” Henderson said in an interview with Postmedia. “I think people are getting impatient but we’re getting close and hopefully once it’s open, it’s open. And it will be a nice bridge and it will give people back the connection that I think has always been a really important pedestrian connection.”

As for the rest of the project, Lindskoog said testing and commissioning is ramping up to prepare for line-wide testing toward the end of the year. Two trains arrived in the Strathearn neighbourhood last week for a two-week testing period along Connors Road, the steepest grade along the line, to ensure a train car can be recovered in an unlikely event it loses power and has to get pulled up the hill.

Responding to the line delays, the city’s valley line technical manager Chris Gentile said the project agreement outlines financial consequences for TransEd but the specific payment amounts for these delays are “commercially sensitive” and not being released publicly.

There will be direct access to the southbound platform from the stadium walkway. Those going north will have to cross the tracks at either end of the station. But that's fine because theoretically we won't be competing with the southbound crush to get onto the platform.

1. Heavy rail using the CP ROW to Whyte
2. LRT continuation with a park and ride in Nisku, stop at the outlet mall and a terminal stop very similar to what you see at YVR actually.
