Oh, oh, can I play?

If it does go on University Boulevard, there's a good chance of them trying to save trees and remove car lanes (i.e. a SB alignment).

Ok, here's my crack at it:

A few reasons why I chose this alignment/stations:
  • It's more direct than the northern option
  • It has optional stations that will serve potential development sites. It is likely new development will finance a significant portion of the new line.
  • Adequately serves UBC's very large campus with several stations.
  • Suitable staging site for a tunnel boring machine. Right now, it is just an empty field.
  • Allows for potential long-term loop extension down 41st Avenue.

It's silly to have a multi billion dollar subway running through a golf course and forest reserve, so I would like to see the area between W 16th and Chancellor developed. Pacific Spirit Park is enough for that area, and there is already 5 other golf courses as well.

It's an area the size of the West End, and that should be the target density. A real U District, like a normal city.

I was thinking this same route however end is Wesbrook village instead.

Ironically, Condon, Fitch, Murphy and Johnston have gone uncharacteristically silent...
You mean like this?

It's like a greatest hits of arguments nobody cares about

I doubt UBC would get more than 1 station. They might do a second for the area below 16th, but I doubt it.

Downtown really only has 5 or 6 unique stations. It would be doubtful that UBC gets 5.

The two spots where I think the line would likely end up are either adjacent to Thunderbird Parkade (shortest route), or on top of the trolley bus loop (basically central to the daytime population). Most likely, that's the terminus. Both alignments are likely to follow 10th, probably elevated from Blanca westwards. I doubt any station would go beyond the East Mall.

The Acadia Station, moved a bit eastwards would make sense to rough in. The MST nations own the golf coarse. They promised they wouldn't redevelop for a while (starting in I think 2009), but who's going to stop them? I got to waste 3 hours of my life sitting through the UBC Alma Mater Society meeting where they voted to support the university giving this away, not that they had any say in the matter. There's another few thousand condos that could be built as TOD there, and it would be far enough from the UBC stations to need it's own.

I believe the golf course has a lease until beyond 2030, so the condos will have to wait. Personally, I'm hoping they sit on it - that's the spot I marked for the zoo and/or natural history museum in the Amenities thread.

That's only 9 years away. I doubt very much that Lelem and the Jericho Garrison Lands will be built out in 9 years, so it will probably be longer than that.

They have a lot of projects on the go.

There's a difference between building a station and allowing for a future station. The latter is almost free, and it would be a bit crazy not to allow for future expansion. Allowing for, say, 5 stations means you could pick and choose which ones to actually go ahead and build later depending on how future development pans out.

Depending, of course, on what kind of future station we're looking at. 3-7 years after completion, it'd be much easier to extend the line to a Wesbrook Station than to construct an Acadia Station while the line's in use.

Note "beyond 2030" - I've heard 2033, or even 2083.
