Yeah Lev 1-4 are mostly ER, imaging, surgery, and ICU level care. Regular patient rooms are 6+

I love downtown Montreal's CHUM. Simple elegant modern buildings that don't look depressing, and with lots of windows to boot.

They're already piling, and it seems to be a relatively quiet operation. the rigs are drilling rigs, that use an auger to drill out a column, then they install a steel casing with a steel core, and fill it with concrete. There's a very brief few seconds when they hammer in the core right at the end, otherwise there's really no noise, and the casing I saw being installed apparently went in very easily.

and they did NOT PILE DRIVE .... and that area is in a major floodplain. I cant tell you the number of times I have not been able to drive down Gilmore south of the station due flooding. like DOZENS and DOZENS and DOZENS over the years.

so this areas is a actual floodplain and no pile driving is needed.

then you have the St Pauls site that has been a parking lot and train station for 100 what ... 80 years? and it needs to be pile driven?

I don't buy that.

Probably 'cause St Paul's is on compacted rubble & landfill and Gilmore isn't. Much higher chance of liquefaction.

There's a difference between surface water flooding and the soil/ground conditions to support the foundation of a building.

I’m lucky to have a spouse who shares my passion for following our city’s evolution, and endless meetings like this one. Now on its fourth review, The Urban Design Panel spent over four hours examining the new St Paul’s Hospital, splitting it into two sessions. We’ve already covered the first section that dealt with the wider site, and now we’ll handle the hospital itself. Fortunately, Hannah chose to cook something that tastes good reheated, and city staff were equally flexible.

They admitted not everything in the guidelines was achievable, and the self-described motley crew that made up the applicant team revealed even the view cones had limits. The two protrusions are small, and allow air ambulances approaching from the west to land on the north tower, and use a high speed elevator to connect to the emergency room. Yet within an hour it was clear they had run into a brick wall, and two very angry landscape architects.

I'm surprised they are not renaming the hospital and they are keeping the christian symbols so prominent.

And with all that is going on in the news (including the 215 children and now two burnt down churches), I'm also surprised that indigenous symbols and christian symbols are sharing the same space.

Not much choice - Providence Health Care is a Catholic organization.

They finally posted a construction update on the website last month:

Beginning in June, four drilling rigs will begin the months- long work of drilling secant piles along the existing guide wall. The walls are formed by the drills extracting the soil, and then filling it with concrete piles. The piles are reinforced with steel beams.

Secant piles replace pile driving, which means less noise and vibration. Here’s a video that shows a similar process to what’s happening at Station Street.

The concrete will come in on trucks using Terminal Avenue and Station Streets as their primary routes. They will leave the same way. The fill removed during drilling will also be trucked from site during this time, using the same route.

After drilling is complete, the heaving digging begins to extract the soil from within the walls. That is expected to start in September and last until early 2022. The final truck route is still being considered by the City of Vancouver and we will let you know as soon as it’s confirmed.

That's already out of date, as they've had a fifth drilling rig operating for several weeks. The seacant wall seems to be progressing pretty well. There's a wheel washing station so the trucks taking the drilling spoil out, and the empty concrete trucks aren't leaving a trail as they leave the site. There aren't that many trucks at this stage; that will clearly change once they start excavating the hole.
