Almost has a brutalist factory look to it. Definitely did not see that coming. Thought we'd have a nice shiny new building to look at, but its just a big dull box. It'll serve its function I guess.

I think this will be better since the main entrance now faces west. Before, it faced south onto a side road. This way, it's more obviously a front door.

Eek, looks straight out of the 60's. I know this isn't the US with its big pharma dollars, but public hospitals shouldn't be looking demolition-ready before shovels even hit the ground. The new CHUM in Montreal at least looks like it'll age well:

That's how they convince people not to show up unless they really have to. Make it as ugly as possible

What exactly is phase 1?

Is it the two easternmost buildings connected by skybridge?

I'm guessing phase 1 is all the colored in buildings here and future phases are the greyed out buildings.

I don't think it's phased. The press release suggests the entire $2.17bn hospital will be built in one hit. The grey building(s) are the non-hospital parts of the development; offices, research (The Health Innovation Research Park), and possibly a hotel. Those probably wouldn't be developed by Providence.

There is one clinical/research building that isn't a part of the PCL deal already signed but will need to be ready at the same time, as they occupy space in the current St. Paul's campus.

Its a hospital. Its no Vancouver House.

As long as it turns out better finish quality that Vancouver House, I rather have a few well functioning square boxes.

I don’t know why people keep going back to this either or mentality. It can be both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Personally, a lot of the things I find ugly offer absolutely no functional purpose whatsoever. Ie the weird colour blocking.

Exactly, or the beige (like why in this day and age lol), or the vertical striping at the ends of the tower blocks, or the different facade treatments everywhere - it's like they want to make it look like it already had 10 bad renovations on day one.

No. That’s false choice. It could actually cost less. Read dleungs post. They are adding a bunch of stuff that makes it look ugly, it provides no function and it costs more than just doing something clean and simple

At least the handful of future office towers slated for the western portion of the site will help shield the ugliness from view.

I don’t mind the look of the building. I think it will be a nice contrast to all the glass and spandrel downtown.

The street level interaction looks good with lots of great public space and that is all I really care about for a hospital in terms of design.
