I hope they are not going to put some tacky cladding on this beautiful building!!!
They're doing maintenance/repairs on the exterior masonry.
From their permit: "Provide crack and spall repairs at brick masonry. Provide small spall repairs and replacement of all other damaged limestone cladding stones. Provide full mortar replacement at all existing limestone cladding. Provide minor patching repairs and replacement at limestone cladding, including cornices, friezes, and other decorative details. Provide selective tuckpointing at damaged brick masonry mortar. Provide structural repairs/upgrades at north elevation interior stairwell and elevator shaft walls (no changes anticipated at exterior for these repairs)."

Feels like they've been working on it for over a year now.

I highly doubt they would be allowed to ruin it with new cladding. Pretty sure it's a local (and national) historic building.

They're tearing it down to build a four-story beige condo building.

You forgot to include "stucco" in that description.

I mean, they could go with the more ‘modern’ and ‘relatable’ gray stucco instead. That’s a real possibility. Then they could say it ‘references’ the old stone architecture.

I’m completely against this project.. That land should be used for shopping and restaurants. Or at the very least mixed use. The smiths in the area is already Inadequate for the area population. Continually adding more population to the area without more shopping and restaurants accommodations just makes the situation worse. Especially with all the new residential going in on North Temple. The city really needs to work with Kroger to get them to rebuild Smiths Before adding more population to the area. They should make it a priority as a part of the seventh N. redevelopment. I personally think this land should be used for a couple of restaurants or something. The west side of Salt Lake doesn’t really have any sit down restaurant Accommodations comparable to what most other areas have. I hope the city says no To rezoning this land.

You realize there's a grocery store right across the street from here, right?

I agree the west side needs more shopping and restaurant options, but it's also a pretty low-density area at the moment. That will come with higher density.

Maybe you are thinking of the wrong project...? There's a grocery store across the street and another one within walking distance of this project. As well as a bunch of small, local Mexican restaurants nearby. There are other projects on the West side, however, that are in areas with literally no grocery stores but this is not one of them...

I think this is a great spot for townhouses and hopefully we see more. Why should single-family homes have exclusive access to the Jordan River, nearby transit, and the massive Riverside park? It's certainly better than another strip mall if that's what you're advocating for.

Smiths is a normal mainstream grocery store. Luckys is like a discount store kind of like what Food 4 Less used to be and it’s not a very nice store. I would be all for Albertsons tearing that crap down and building a nice new full service Albertsons there. That would probably be a better location then smiths and it would be nice to have the Albertsons brand name back, even though they do own lucky. Smiths is the only normal main stream grocery store that serves the whole west side. The store is so undersized that they can’t even have a normal full service butcher. There really isn’t an excuse for Kroger letting that store go so long with out expanding. When they built it there was also a Safeway and other small stores on 300W… as those stores disappeared over time it put more demand on that smiths. Then the Albertsons on north Temple closed adding even more demand… sure there is a rancho market, but it’s not a main stream or even a very nice store. The west side needs a nice new grocery store… but Kroger and Harmon’s don’t care… cuz it’s the west side. Maybe they will care in 5 years when it’s a lot more gentrified.

The density of the area is going to increase dramatically over the next few years, and they are not really planning for any Commercial accommodations witch are already lacking.

Some conduit and such arrived on site a few weeks ago and has just been sitting in the dirt, untouched since then. Besides that nothing has happened in several months.

Hmm...Hopefully, it's just indicative of supply hiccups and not a financing issue.

Where is that going to be? Hardware District? Hopefully there's some retail involved. And that looks like a pretty hefty parking garage.

Edit: they have some more renderings on their website.
