I'm currently educating myself on this language.

Social equity is not based on treating all persons or communities the same. Instead, it is giving the same opportunities to all and though there might be an imbalance in who can receive those benefits (i.e., social or economical conditions), it is there for equitable distribution.
I really wish Vancouver would get off the woke train and start making some sense.

That's what I understand.

Its allocating resources based on predetermined set of circumstances, likely based on oppressive circumstances.

In this instance I would expect this to mean that Westbank would somehow as a developer have to pursue a policy of ensuring this building is filled up with people of presumably previously disadvantaged groups?

Maybe Holt Renfrew, BMW, Audi, Porsche and other high end stores should do the same!

I really really miss the days of the good old hippy left; peace, love and equality.

Now it’s all divide, hate, shame, categorize and judge.

It almost feels like the stock market before the financial crash of 2008, all jumbled algorithms and linguistics that change daily and come off as intentionally confusing.

Especially at a time when right wing politics have gone off the rails it would be nice to have a sane and grounded left.

What the f*ck does that even mean? Social equity?

So its the developers job to ensure;

I need to quit reading these threads, they just give me high blood pressure.
I think it's solely in relation to the income-tied units. This would be the developer's responsibility to ensure a measure of social equity within an expensive city, though a small amount, within the understanding that this is a pilot program. Under the program that they applied under for more density, the signed into an agreement for reduced rent units for the lifetime of the building. So in a sense they are ensuring that equity.

No, just the income brackets determined by the policy they applied under to get more density at this cherry picked site by the City, which is only 20% of the whole building.

It's just fluff. Westbank can't realistically fix structural problems that begin with politics bending to the will of corporations

SJW stuff explained:

Equality is what the "i don't see colour" people want, as they stand on the left side of the tree. Equity is still unjust but often-accepted bandaid solutions because Justice is so elusive.

One could skip all that crap and they could just share the same latter on the left side of the tree and call that “peace”

Also curious to how the right side of the tree suddenly became full of apples in the last frame.

But thanks GenWhy for clearing up what that wordy fluff actually means for this project.

Well, "Develop evaluative frameworks to allow diversity in income and background" takes up more text.

622 SW Marine Drive - UDP

Public Plazas Take Rental Homes To The Rack, As The Urban Design Panel Splits Over A Haircut

622 SW Marine Drive
Perhaps these virtual Urban Design Panel meetings are getting to me, as Hannah caught me dozing off at the start of this item. Then again, maybe it’s because the previous one was a modest industrial building, also on Southwest Marine Drive. Unfortunately, I may as well have slept through that previous review as I later lost my notes when I reformatted my computer. However, I can confirm it won this body’s support, albeit with a few recommendations.

It took about an hour to reach that conclusion, and roughly twice that to review this mix of 456 market, and 117 below-market rental homes, with 35% of those operated by the YWCA. Those deeper levels of affordability are only possible due to a city council directed issues report that’s currently in a draft phase. Yet, it already includes some restrictions that split the panel, like prohibiting shadowing on Ash Park (Marpole’s third best), or challenges to Marine Gateway’s prominence in the skyline

Thanks!
It would have been nice if the flatiron element were taller.

Thanks FF! Caught this on your blog first, but the images you post on SSP seem to expand better which is helpful, especially for the materials board etc...

I am very excited for this project, like I said before it just hits all the elements we need for housing, even if it isn't the most architecturally exciting.

The one rendering seems to have a very different colour palette than the previous drawn renderings. Did you get a sense from the meeting which better reflects the intent of the design?

NIMBYs don't like art

Quote:
Residents in False Creek South say a small site in their neighbourhood isn’t the right place for a 2.5 storey sculpture of a boy holding a shark.

The Vancouver Biennale wants to install the art work by Chinese artist Chen Wenling on an round, raised garden area by the Seawall to the east of Moberly Road in July for two years.
Also, no one is going to go out of their way to come see this sculpture.

More likely they are concerned that people will discover the hidden pathway through their complex
(which I only noticed when clipping this shot).
The location I think is the semi-circular platform shown here - the perfect place, as it is an area OFF the seawall path.

This piece of artwork is backlit at night, highlighting the odd shapes.

Not surprising, Council voted against the motion last night for expanded no-rezoning social housing. What was interesting was each councilor's excuses for why they voted the way they did.

I was 70% watching hockey so dismissed most of the hearing, but Frances Bula on her Twitter had a good recap.

3615 - 3645 Fraser Street - Terminated / What Happened

With city council’s decision not to renew or replace the Affordable Housing Choices Interim Rezoning Policy, Darren and I have watched the activity in our guide to that program wither away. A few active rezoning proposals linger, awaiting the judgment of our elected officials, but one has remained jarringly stuck at the pre-application stage. We have heard several times that many rental housing projects failed to pass that stage, and we have learned this final one will share their fate.

This was not due to the moderate amount of opposition at its applicant-led open house, as it paled in comparison to a now approved rental building under the same program a few blocks to the south. Nor was it related to the questions that event left us with, which combined with the monotony of the pandemic, is why we reached out to discover what happened here. After all, if cats could become lawyers, what did we have to lose.

As that clip dominated the internet, this firm, fresh off purchasing a 100-acre industrial site in Bristol, England, agreed to speak with us, and almost as shockingly owned this failure.
