I had to post this here as it's, without a doubt, the best video I've ever seen of lower Manhattan in the 1930s.

Can you imagine what this must have looked like to an immigrant coming from Europe? Riding in on a ship after weeks at sea, and this is what you see. It must have been mind-melting.

My God, Lower Manhattan -- it's kind of the reason we're all here. I mean, it turns into "we are getting a new 13-storey Holiday Inn in Barrhaven", but at the origin-point it's this video.

I just spent the last 20 minutes watching that video on repeat, should probably do some work now...

The colourization was top notch and really makes everything seem so much more... real. It's easy to have an idea of the classic Manhattan skyline but it actually feels like you could be there watching that.

It's funny to think that while we see this as a glorious showcase of the art's founding masterpieces, at the time there were many people who saw it as an absurd Babylon of toilet brush kings piling palace-fragments on top of each other all willy-nilly until their money ran out.

I can ALMOST see it, like, what exactly goes on inside an insurance company's Halicarnassus Mausoleum, built halfway to God? I can almost hear the ancien regime's protest of meaninglessness.

But in the end I was born to American turbo-modernity and this is the best thing ever.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is how you do a skyline. So beautiful. So classy. Best ever. Way, way, way better than the current version of the lower Manhattan skyline.

Absolutely gorgeous.
