From the ABJ article:

Quote:
Elon Musk could be planning another facility across the toll road from the Tesla Inc. gigafactory rising in eastern Travis County. But instead of making more room for his electric car company, multiple sources told Austin Business Journal that land has been set aside for his space exploration company, SpaceX.

It could be the site for the proposed Starlink factory.

Elon moved to TX and now he’s bringing everything he has with him.

Reported Tesla supplier setting up shop in San Antonio

Quote:
By Jessica Corso
Reporter, San Antonio Business Journal
April 3rd, 2021

The San Antonio City Council has approved an economic incentives package for a manufacturer of lithium-ion battery electrodes said to be a Tesla Inc. supplier.

Saueressig Engineering, a division of Pittsburg-based Matthews International Corp. (Nasdaq: MATW), announced plans last month to build a factory on San Antonio's East Side pending the approval of economic incentives, which came unanimously during the City Council meeting April 1. According to prior San Antonio Business Journal reporting, it would be the North American headquarters of Saueressig.

The incentives package will give Saueressig a 75% tax abatement on its property over a 10-year period beginning in January 2022. In exchange, the company has promised to hire 50 people at a minimum salary of $50,000 by 2025. The company has also promised to invest $9 million upgrading the property at 4338 Profit Drive where it plans to set up shop.

The new factory "places San Antonio in a great position to draw additional electric car part suppliers to our community and further develop our automotive and advanced manufacturing capabilities," Mayor Ron Nirenberg said. "That's not just a San Antonio priority, it’s a regional economic development priority."

Elon Musk highlights Austin’s need for more housing after cryptic tweet

https://www.teslarati.com/elon-musk-...pacex-starbase

Quote:
Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently highlighted the need for more residential projects in the greater Austin, Texas area. Musk’s comments came after he posted a cryptic tweet that seemed to hint at some notable projects in the Texas capital.

The Tesla CEO initially posted a cryptic tweet that read “Austin++” on his Twitter page. True to the nature of popular Elon Musk tweets, the single-word post incited discussions about what the CEO might be referring to. Some of Musk’s supporters, for one, suggested that the tweet could be referring to projects that would significantly improve the Austin area, such as Giga Texas, which is on track to employ thousands of people...

It will be funny if the city starts listening only because Elon said it.

I think it is really telling that the San Antonio BJ reports on 50 new indirect jobs from a Tesla supplier and the ABJ reports on 10,000 direct jobs.

Hyperdrive Daily: Another Tesla Executive Heads South By Southwest

They keep coming....

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsl...h-by-southwest

"Now I've learned Zachary Kirkhorn, Tesla's under-the-radar CFO, has purchased a house that overlooks Lake Austin, thanks to some public-records sleuthing and an assist from my colleague Laurel Calkins. The Austin Relocation Guide describes the red-hot neighborhood where Kirkhorn bought a home as “one of the most exclusive luxury real estate areas in all of Austin.”

And more are coming.....

"Musk and Kirkhorn aren't the only ones in the automotive world putting down roots in the Lone Star state. On Friday, my colleagues broke the news that John Krafcik was stepping down as CEO of Waymo, Alphabet's self-driving car company, after more than five years at the helm. I hadn't realized Krafcik also moved to Austin. It's on his Twitter bio, and property records show he bought a house in the Barton Hills neighborhood last fall. What is he going to do next?

A matter of time?

"For now, Tesla's headquarters remain in the hills of Palo Alto, home to Stanford University and long the center of gravity for Silicon Valley. But once Tesla's Austin plant is complete, I wouldn't be shocked if the corporate headquarters moved, which would instantly be fodder for another round of “Is California Over?" and “Texodus” stories."

I was going to post that same article yesterday but glad that you beat me to it.

The CEO and CFO of Tesla both living in Austin adds credence that once the facility is complete and Tesla has settled into their new digs that the HQ move will follow. I remember when Tesla first announced the new Gigafactory in Austin that Elon said “I asked all the executives at Tesla where to put the next Gigafactory and where they feel comfortable living and the response was overwhelmingly Austin. When I asked about the next best alternative after Austin, the room became silent. Crickets.”

It seems they’re planting their roots in Austin and it seems that the HQ is a matter of when and not if anymore.

Here's a good update from today, April 13th, on the numerous sites located within the massive Tesla site. For those who haven't been following the construction, the red outline shows just how massive the site is and how little is being used for the initial phase.

Insights from two Austin Realtors. They seem to believe the factory could bring in 20k-30k new workers to the area within the next four years. Worth a listen.

I could see the Riverside area exploding with dense housing if that happens. Or even along 183 or 130.

I agree that the Riverside area will get a fair share of these workers. But these guys think it's east of 130 as far as Bastrop that will be impacted the most. Most of these are skilled laborers manufacturing workers that will make around $45k. Presumably their money will go further outside the city core. I personally don't think there will be any meaningful density built in the Riverside area in our lifetime to make it sensibly affordable for someone making $45k.

Anyway, if this plays out and the 71 corridor gets built out, I think an extension of the rail line to Bastrop is inevitable.

That's way too far for light rail. 20 miles of light rail is $$, sprawling into suburbs for peak-only commuter trips.

I think we'll instead see the green line extended to Elgin. Potentially even further.

Edit: as a point of comparison, it would be only a ~15 mile extension of the Orange Line to hit both Round Rock and Georgetown (total 2019 population ~200k), and I still don't think we'll see that in our lifetimes.

I was under the impression the jobs were well less than $45,000 a year. Many of the manufacturing jobs were starting at $15 an hour.

It was in many reports when Tesla first made plans in Austin. 65% of their workforce will be at this level. https://www.forbes.com/sites/erikshe...h=2224d79121e9

It’s a misreading of Tesla’s agreement with the county by someone apparently with an axe to grind.

Tesla committed to a $15 “livable wage” minimum.

That doesn’t mean that everyone makes that. That doesn’t mean that _anyone_ makes that. It just means that Tesla is legally prohibited from ever paying anyone less. Even for their non-permanent construction labor.

65% of the jobs are unskilled, not necessarily $15 /hour.

From the linked County presentation:
“ Approximately 65% unskilled labor
Living wage of $15/hour - construction and permanent labor force Average annual salary $47,147
Full benefits”
