The San Antonio City Council has approved an economic incentives package for a manufacturer of lithium-ion battery electrodes said to be a Tesla Inc. supplier.

Saueressig Engineering, a division of Pittsburg-based Matthews International Corp. (Nasdaq: MATW), announced plans last month to build a factory on San Antonio's East Side pending the approval of economic incentives, which came unanimously during the City Council meeting April 1. According to prior San Antonio Business Journal reporting, it would be the North American headquarters of Saueressig.

The incentives package will give Saueressig a 75% tax abatement on its property over a 10-year period beginning in January 2022. In exchange, the company has promised to hire 50 people at a minimum salary of $50,000 by 2025. The company has also promised to invest $9 million upgrading the property at 4338 Profit Drive where it plans to set up shop.

The new factory "places San Antonio in a great position to draw additional electric car part suppliers to our community and further develop our automotive and advanced manufacturing capabilities," Mayor Ron Nirenberg said. "That's not just a San Antonio priority, it’s a regional economic development priority."

I think it is really telling that the San Antonio BJ reports on 50 new indirect jobs from a Tesla supplier and the ABJ reports on 10,000 direct jobs.

I was going to post that same article yesterday but glad that you beat me to it.

The CEO and CFO of Tesla both living in Austin adds credence that once the facility is complete and Tesla has settled into their new digs that the HQ move will follow. I remember when Tesla first announced the new Gigafactory in Austin that Elon said “I asked all the executives at Tesla where to put the next Gigafactory and where they feel comfortable living and the response was overwhelmingly Austin. When I asked about the next best alternative after Austin, the room became silent. Crickets.”

It seems they’re planting their roots in Austin and it seems that the HQ is a matter of when and not if anymore.

I could see the Riverside area exploding with dense housing if that happens. Or even along 183 or 130.

I agree that the Riverside area will get a fair share of these workers. But these guys think it's east of 130 as far as Bastrop that will be impacted the most. Most of these are skilled laborers manufacturing workers that will make around $45k. Presumably their money will go further outside the city core. I personally don't think there will be any meaningful density built in the Riverside area in our lifetime to make it sensibly affordable for someone making $45k.

Anyway, if this plays out and the 71 corridor gets built out, I think an extension of the rail line to Bastrop is inevitable.

That's way too far for light rail. 20 miles of light rail is $$, sprawling into suburbs for peak-only commuter trips.

I think we'll instead see the green line extended to Elgin. Potentially even further.

Edit: as a point of comparison, it would be only a ~15 mile extension of the Orange Line to hit both Round Rock and Georgetown (total 2019 population ~200k), and I still don't think we'll see that in our lifetimes.

I was under the impression the jobs were well less than $45,000 a year. Many of the manufacturing jobs were starting at $15 an hour.

It’s a misreading of Tesla’s agreement with the county by someone apparently with an axe to grind.

Tesla committed to a $15 “livable wage” minimum.

That doesn’t mean that everyone makes that. That doesn’t mean that _anyone_ makes that. It just means that Tesla is legally prohibited from ever paying anyone less. Even for their non-permanent construction labor.

65% of the jobs are unskilled, not necessarily $15 /hour.
