I came here to say this.

Social housing is not part of the Cities scope either, but it seems very inclined to spend literally hundredths of millions on that.

How about we spend some of that on schools instead of hotels for drug addicts.

That be cool.

Gotta wonder what's going to happen to these sites long term. I don't know what strings are attached to the Federal dollars, but this could end up being a net financial win for the City.

Seems most likely that they'll convert it into temporary housing until they have more funding to redevelop.

The RHI will quickly develop new modular multi-unit rentals, convert non-residential buildings into affordable multi-residential homes, and rehabilitate buildings that are abandoned or in disrepair into affordable multi-residential homes. Costs to purchase land and buildings will also be eligible under the new initiative.

Sure but hotels are ready to go almost immediately. I was thinking more like this is shelter for 50-60 people while they get other housing built. In the future I can see them selling off this piece of land for condos, making a windfall profit (to be directed at more shelter or social housing).

It would be more likely to be redeveloped as a rental building with some continued low income units. Despite a widely held view that 'The City owns lots of land to solve the housing crisis' - they don't, which is why they have to buy opportunities like this.

It looks as if those Federal funds could also be used to fix up the Balmoral and Regent Hotels. Those will take longer that this year, given the state the previous owner allowed them to get into.

Those places should be torn down and rebuilt. It will be cheaper and better, possibly faster.

Isn't lack of capital to build on their lands a larger issue? I mean if they were really into flipping land in the future I'm sure they could find better spots than the Days Inn. It's just a short-term bandaid to get housing that doesn't require a new building.

I place my bets on the Balmoral/Regent being demolished since the amount of money to fix them they could probably build multiple new buildings.

Just noticed this has nothing to do with Olympic Village. I'll end it here.

I'll flip this back on topic. Since the OV schools seems to be coming together, maybe, and there's lots of talk about False Creek South, what's happening with the last bit of waterfront between Hinge Park and the Cambie bridge?

Some TMH went in, but there's a big chunk of valuable land, city owned.

Don't you just love it when Vin spews misinformation? We might not have Trump on twitter anymore but we still have Vin on SSP for entertainment.

I didn't realize it has breezeways for the podium.
I don't like those as you and your stuff/groceries may get wet on the way up.

They also have an outside elevator facing West 2nd, with a half level door "blocking" access. Can't wait to see how that goes.

The No Frills on West 4th at Pine has a double-sided elevator from the underground garage to the street and store and I've never seen any vagrants in it, but it's a busy elevator that probably locks off after store hours.

Thought this was strange too but I did notice there seems to be a PIN pad of sorts that I assume is used to authorize the elevator to be called. And then of course a resident would need to fob to whatever floor on top of that.

It's a rental. That pin will go out to anyone who wants it soon enough.

Elevators can be temperamental enough without exposing them to the elements.

They have been doing a lot of pile driving and/or drilling in recent weeks. Concerned about the soil quality?

it is all infill land and used to be heavy industrial. i imagine there is probably contaminates and that area is known for soil instability, similar to Richmond.
