I imagine they will go down the 417 at Queensway station and get off at Bayshore Drive as they did before the Pinecrest-Bayshore Transitway was built.

Before the Pinecrest-Bayshore Transitway was built, the Kanata express buses didn't stop at Bayshore or Moodie and the 96 (or previously the 97) would use Carling and Richmond from Lincoln Fields and loop through Bayshore Mall (there was no Bayshore Station). It would go down the mall ramp to the 1st level and run through the parkade beside the mall to the end and then loop around, along Woodridge and Bayshore drive to Richmond and merge on to the 417. Eastbound it did the same loop in the same direction but using a left turn from Richmond into the mall and then turn left off of Bayshore drive onto Richmond.

I expect what they would do is exit at Bayshore drive like you suggested and cross the 417 on Richmond to Holly Acres and enter the station from the back. If the Bayshore-Moodie Transitway is closed for construction, they might hop back on the 417 at Holly Acres to Moodie.

The Kanata Connexion busses might skip Bayshore and/or Moodie though like the old days.

Looking at old route maps, it looks like the 96 and 97 did travel through Bayshore after the station opened. My mistake.

Bayshore station was actually built in 2000. At the time, it was just the two northern-most structures. It was a stand-alone Transitway station similar to Place d'Orleans (full service station with red piping architecture, but not connected to any Transitway segment).

When they built the Pinecrest-Bayshore Transitway, they added the third structure and bus platform closest to the 417 for a more direct route though the station for the new RoW.

You can see the evolution of the station on GeoOttawa: https://maps.ottawa.ca/geoottawa/

On the pic below, the wwo structure on the left were completed in 2000, while the structure on the right, nearest the highway and on the new Transitway, was completed in 2009.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayshore_station_(Ottawa)

I only took the bus regularly between from 2006 to 2008 (Kanata to La Cite, until the 2008-2009 bus strike) so my memory of the bus routes are a little fuzzy, but I seem to remember that the express buses skipped the Bayshore, but not the 96. Never took the 97, so I couldn't tell.

aw, Larry O'Brien's bus strike. Another stupid move by the City of Ottawa that accomplished nothing but to drive bus riders away.

Yep- the Kanata express buses always skipped Bayshore until the Bayshore-Pinecrest Transitway segment was completed.

I remember it was pretty annoying as an Algonquin student in the early 2000s. I couldn't easily stop at Bayshore on the way home because it was difficult to catch the bus home. Since I was living in Kanata North, I couldn't transfer at Eagleson either. (The inability to transfer to service to Kanata North at Eagleson remains an unsolved problem, though at least the overpass now has sidewalks).

Before Bayshore station opened, the 97 did a full loop through Bayshore in both directions:

Westbound from Richmond Rd, through the parking garage, then along Woodridge, then back onto Richmond to the 417W ramp.

Eastbound, From Holly Acres to Richmond, left to Bayshore, through the parking garage, Woodridge, then left back onto Richmond.

The introduction of route 96 finally provided an all-day route to Kanata that skipped the Richmond/Carling segment.

Not to defend the bus strike, but I would have made the permanent switch at some point anyway.

At the time, we lived in Carp. And not the village, but deep in the woods, 10 km from the nearest bus stop (Carp Road Park-and-Ride at the 417 on-ramp, expresses buses only). The first two years, I had to depend on my parents to drive me in the city to catch a bus and pick me up on Carp road or in Kanata (depending what time I would finish school). When I started driving in 2008, I was only allowed to drive as far as the Terry Fox Park-and-Ride.

The bus strike sped-up my inevitable switch to driving permanently.

In recent years living in Olreans, my partner convinced me to try transit, and we did once in a while. In December 2019, when Line 1 seemed to be stabilized, we canceled our parking. In January up until mid-March, we drove maybe twice a week (if we had plans after work, like visiting our parents in rural villages east and west, or groceries, for example) and took the train the rest of the time. Of course, it wasn't stabilized as it turned out, but we took the delays and bus detours pretty well, joking about it most of the time.

Anyway, we work from home now. If/when we return to work, we'll probably go back to our January-March 2020 arrangement.

Q4 2020 Quarterly update:

Some highlights:
  • The Goldenrod Bridge at Tunney's is set to be completed in Q2 2021, which will enable the removal of the temporary embarkment bridge buses use to access the bus loop from Scott, and thus extend tracks west;
  • Support for excavation at Rochester field and New Orchard started Q4 2020;
  • The new Lincoln Fields station construction is expected to start Q2 2021;
  • New Iris Street bridge set to start Q3 2021, with station Q2 2022;
  • Baseline bus loop complete in Q4 2020, with bus operator building set to be constructed Q2 2021.

EDIT: I realize that the link I posted doesn't work. I've deleted it and will add a functional one when available.

Drone footage of Stage 2 progress, west south and east. Some significant progress on grade separation along all three extensions.

Wow... most cool. thanks for this!

As a relocated Ottawa type, I had no idea things were this far along, and I really enjoy living vicariously though the updates provided in this forum.

It did skip over Dominion/Westboro stations.. which are near and dear to my heart.. anyone know where they are at these days?

No work has been completed at either of those stations so far. The Transitway trench between Tunney's and Dominion is expected to close for conversion in 2022.

Although this could be relevant for all three Stage 2 threads, I will only post it here due to the extensive tunneling and one underground station.

TransLink has released architectural schematics and preliminary conceptual renderings of the interior and exterior of all Millennium Broadway extension stations. This is in stark contrast with Ottawa, that had released the preliminary rendering from the two team RFP submissions, and a few extra renderings here and there.

Here are the Vancouver project's features:
  • The new Broadway stations will feature elevators, stairs and both up and down escalators.
  • All stations will feature a concourse level.
  • Every station will include 3,300 square feet of retail.
  • No public washrooms are planned for the project, but space will be set aside at Arbutus (the terminus until the line is extended to UBC) and Broadway-City Hall (transfer between Millennium and Canada Lines).
  • Arbutus Station and Great Northern Way Station will have secure bike parkades.
  • Stations will only have one entrance, with a second emergency exit only.
  • Stations are designed for additional entrances in the future.

Stations seem very similar to current and planned underground stations in Ottawa, with simple/functional designs and low ceilings. Vancouver has a few extra features like up and down escalators and retail at all stations, but we have more entrances at busier stations, and washrooms at transfer stations.

Vancouver's Broadway stations are all underground as this was necessary due to the route while in Ottawa, there was always an opportunity to make them above ground or open air trenches.

Here is the DailyHive article with dozens of renderings and cross-sections of the Boradway subway stations: https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/broadway-subway-skytrain-millennium-line-extension-station-designs

Here's Arbutus vs Algonquin station platforms. Quite similar in scale. Both will be terminus stations for a number of years before future expansions. Both will have a high number of bus-rail transfers.

Strange that ACCE wasn't designed in such a way that there was direct access to the underground part of the station. Seems like a waste to have to come up a bunch of stairs and cross a pedestrian bridge to get to the building. Maybe I'm missing something.

There is a north station entrance to Algonquin Station just on the west side of the ACCE building. No pedestrian bridge required but you do have to go outside briefly.

That said, the Algonquin Station bus loop and bus integration is garbage compared to the simplicity of Arbutus Station.

Algonquin station will only have one underground level, the platform, and so there will be no concourse level to which the ACCE could connect, while Arbutus will have a concourse level between the tracks and surface level similar to Lyon and Parliament.
