Gondolas would require permanent support structures built solidly into the ground, which is not cheap. I would assume that's where most of the cost would come from.

Probably the thing that concerns me most about the gondolas are those substantial support towers gunking up the beauty of that very narrow, iconic, gorgeous Canyon. I know we have to do something about the traffic situation, but c'mon, those large Alps style gondolas with their large support towers will be a visual monstrosity in one of the Rockies prettiest canyons. I prefer the rail proposal as presented over the gondolas. We're going to have to live with this for the next century, so let's get it right. Large utility like towers trailing all the way up that narrow canyon do not belong!

On a development side, it looks like Liberty Sky is about 70% complete with 30% left until it tops out.

At the rate they are going, we should hopefully see it top out in April I think.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. But while gondolas are more visually imposing, they are less imposing in almost every other way. They wouldn’t require regrading the terrain for construction (at least not to nearly the extent of trains). They wouldn’t require the removal of trees/vegetation anywhere near the amount that train construction would. They’re extremely quiet. Less disruptive to animal life. I think they emit far less pollution as well.

But I suppose since we already have plenty of auto traffic up the canyons a lot of the cons about trains are already present, and gondolas would just add a new imposition.

Loopnet - Commercial Property Sale

I thought I would go on Loopnet and see what properties are for sale right now in Salt Lake City, since they are more than likely to be bought up for redevelopment purposes. I knew a few, but I was surprised and excited by others.

Here are the listings:

176 W 600 S
https://www.loopnet.com/Listing/176-...y-UT/21529830/

Registered Opportunity Zone Property. It's the furthest west D-1 zoning, making it a landmark location in the downtown skyline.
Downtown Salt Lake City’s growth continues to expand across all fronts with numerous high-rise residential, office and hotel developments under construction.

SITE ALSO CAME WITH "TALL RESIDENTIAL RESIDENTIAL OPTION" CONCEPT!

They even had a video! (I had to post it to Youtube in order to include it)

Video Link

I seriously hope whoever buys the property decides to build this tower on the site. I personally think the tower design looks fantastic!

Nice find, Blah_Amazing. It's like an improved, residential version of the old 151 State proposal. Our skyline definitely needs some angles and curves so that would be a really nice addition.

Thanks for the awesome post, Blah_Amazing!

I like that residential tower concept, especially in its position as an outlier from the current concentration of highrises. Is this the potential tower that someone described as reminiscent of the Bank of America tower in New York a while back? Can't remember who, where, or when, but if this is the tower they were referring to then I definitely see it!

No, that rumored tower was on the east side of Main at ~450 S. We haven't heard or seen anything else about it yet.

Lots of potential towers coming down the pipeline

Lost Salt Lake City Gems:

From left to right (4 columns) w/ location:
Salt Lake Theatre (NW corner of State and 100 S),
Empress Theatre (aka Uptown Theatre)(CCC West Elm on Main Street),
Colonial Theatre (aka Victory Theatre)(graffitied storefronts on 300 South between Main and State),
Orpheum Theatre (aka Promised Valley Playhouse)(corner of Orpheum Ave. and State)

I have my fingers crossed we can save the Pantages by relocating the foyer and auditorium.

IMO the greatest loss of that bunch is easily the Salt Lake Theatre. Built in 1861 and demolished in 1928 for a gas station, right? That's gotta be up there with the Newhouse in terms of biggest architectural tragedies in SLC's history.

This has probably already been shared by Old&New or someone else, but if not, this is a 3D virtual tour of the Pantages Utah Theater: https://my.matterport.com/show/?m=Fd4vp2gieEv

Took a drive downtown today and I got to say. I am super impressed with the impact Patrinleys 650 main project has on the skyline. It is much more prominent than I thought it would be, awesome they will be building a second one too. Block 67 is also well off the ground and both structures are now about 3-4 stories high. Driving downtown and seeing the projects, it's clear SLC is finally reaching puberty.

There's been a lot. But on scale alone, the biggest was all the historic architecture lost by the bulldozing of Richards Street to make way for Crossroads.

Yuck.

Great quote!!

Another FYI. I have a close friend who has told me that the Masonic temple project is underway. They have fencing around the parking property and are conducting ground work.

Let's hope that SLC's adolescent growth squirt includes some NBA height!

"In the 1920s, the theater was sold to Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph for $200,000. It was demolished in 1928 and replaced by a telephone exchange."

Not a gas station. It's still a telephone exchange. But still horrific that it was demolished.

I don’t remember any details about this one. Is there information on this project?

The Kensington site has quite a few trailers, a mobile bathroom and large dumpster on it. Maybe they're starting some initial demo work?

No, that was a film set. It'll be gone as fast as it appeared, if it's not gone already.
