Plugged the cars in for the first time this year. Did not venture out much but it was nice with no wind. I figure I can spend a week working out in my little thunder dome. Supposed to start getting warm by weeks end. Still not a lot of snow here compared to other years.

EC is calling for Dawson City to get down to -50 tonight or tomorrow morning, BEFORE wind chill. That is ambient temperature, folks.

Yeah it says -50 on EC’s website. I had to screenshot this for posterity. It’s currently -44C there at 1:00 pm. The forecast looks straight out of the north pole of cold in Siberia.

That -17C has now been "warmed up" to a -15C.
Way better

We had an amazing stretch of weather in Manzhou, at the southern tip of Taiwan this past week. Just perfect.

Iqaluit has hit highs of +1C both yesterday and today while a ton of Southern cities are literally freezing their asses off.

This is actually quite a common occurrence for areas of the far north to be well above seasonal while areas to the south are far above.

Essentially the super cold air is displaced by warm air that travels north to arctic regions, so it has nowhere else to go but south.

This can happen sometimes in the warmer half of the year as well (such as in June when much of southern Canada is stuck in an unsettled pattern with cool temperatures but the NWT is in the high 20s or even 30s.)

LOL... even when it's been proven there is no such thing as dry vs wet cold, people continue to claim such nonsense.

How much moisture can a dewpoint BELOW zero hold? I will give you a hint, it's zero. Even if it's slightly above zero, it's barely holding any moisture.

To me, 0C with a RH of 90% (so dewpoint of -1C) feels milder than 0C with a RH of 50% (so dewpoint of -9C) but I don't go about and claim the latter is colder of the 2 conditions because it's factually incorrect.

People need to understand once and for all that wind is the only thing that affect the real feel temperature when it's colder outside.

-8C with a wind chill of -14 and sunny. Apparently, it must feel colder than that since our dewpoint of -17C is bone curdling wet cold.

Low of -15C (wind chill of -22) this morning. It's not that bad considering what the rest of the country is experiencing relative to normal.

The warmspot was Sable Island, NS at 9.7C.

Hey Nicko, why don't you include the national cold spot in your nightly summary in addition to the national warm spot?

-14C sunny, calm and with a windchill of -25 in Moncton at 8 AM.

This is the first time this winter that I have noticed squeaky snow!

The polar vortex has now reached the Maritimes, but this is a walk in the park compared to conditions on the Prairies.

News item for Tancredi who seems to have a romantic notion about the wilds of Canada during the wintertime.

^ the boiler in my 1906 house has basically been running constantly over the past few days.

The interior of the house is so dry, static shocks are approaching cardiac arrest.

Fluid density is important in heat transfer, I think people forget the air is more dense in Vancouver and Toronto than in higher elevation places like Calgary. So let’s say high (not dry) cold feels less cold than low cold.

I've experienced both for literal decade(s) in each spot, as this is my tenth winter here, and still come to the same conclusion, so I'll stick with my original statement.

Currently -29 at 8 am. Still haven't broken the -30 mark, but likely to happen tomorrow night.

Cloudy, some flurries, and 1 degree at just after 12. Looks like we got about 25 cm of snow yesterday/overnight in total, though it first snowed, then rained, then snowed again. I feel for anyone who didn't shovel before the rain started.
