The wood-pannelled structure you see is an existing building - a Comfort Inn - not part of the new construction.

The new portion along lakelands boulevard definitely looks wood-clad, but I can see a concrete structure when peeking inside. Kind of reminds me of the new retirement home near ben’s.

If you mean prominence in terms of height and elevation, yes. If you mean building height then probably #2-3 for a while behind Fenwick and the main Richmond Yards tower. Fenwick is about 33 storeys and Richmond Yards is going to be 30. Not sure of the height of these buildings in meters.

IIRC Fenwick is 98m but I'm not sure the new top height after the renovation is done. I saw 100m+ for this one so it got my noggin' joggin'.

I wonder how prominent it will be from the MacKay at the purported height.

Yeah, the Fenwick thread says 106 m post renos but I think that is for the old plan. I don't know what it will end up being. I think "100 m+" for this one is just an estimate, but for a hotel I'd expect a similar height per floor to Fenwick or Richmond Yards.

And there's 7177 Quinpool at 32 stories.

True. That one seems like an imaginary project because there's no rendering online.

7177 seems to be moving slowly but I expect it will pick up speed as the weather breaks.

I also thought it was 34 stories, but could be wrong

In the 7177 thread, first post, there is a link to the HRM report that says a construction permit was issued (as of September 2019) for 32 storeys. Unfortunately there is not much detail in that report and there aren't even elevation drawings nor do they seem to give a height in meters/feet.

I hate to say it, but could this be topped out? I think we might have been bamboozled. I'd love to be proven wrong and just dreaming things lol

It’s funny you mention that, I’ve been increasingly sceptical the last few weeks this would hit 28 floors. As you mention, the concrete is finished differently at the top floor, no rebar extensions for the next column. The formwork is stripped, but does not appear to be setup for the next floor slab. In fact, I think the formwork has started showing up at Grandhaven III, the developers next building. My understanding is this developer self performs their work, as in manages the trades, which is t too uncommon, however, in this case they own the crane and formwork. Grandhaven III is coming out of the ground which is when you’d typically see a crane and modular forms used.

The crane placement was also not terribly conducive for a height extension. It is fairly far from the building for lateral bracing, something you’d need when it grows higher. So this may have been the plan from the start.

Another explanation could be switching to steel (unlikely) or a set back we can’t see. But I tend to agree, I think it is done.

I wonder if they are moving assets and putting this one on "hold" or will be doing other stuff with this one like exterior work while they get Grand Haven going?

EDIT: I found another photo taken by HFX Developments on Facebook. Halifax Tower Hotel Facebook Photo

Appears there *may* be a set back or they are working on a "16th" level as an equipment level?

The renderings don’t show a step back until the penthouse with the rotating restaurant, maybe that is what is happening now?

The renderings also show a completely different podium to what we are seeing built, so I'm skeptical that they are up to date.

This is certainly looking topped out. White precast has begun, it looks quite different than the renderings.

It may be premature of me to say this but so far it’s looking pretty sad.

Most of the issue seems to be how the developers talk up these buildings. If we just heard about a hotel going up in Bayers Lake without any fanfare we would not expect an architectural marvel.

It makes me worry about the Mills redevelopment, which is supposed to be a landmark. That one is in a much more visible and important location. I'm also not sure I believe that 7177 Quinpool will materialize as a high-end 32 storey tower with a small number of units per floor.

As much as I’d like to deny it, when it comes to new buildings I can be a sucker for marketing.

I do suspect we’ll be seeing a Margaretta-type block of poorly coloured spandrel or aluminum siding on the Mills site. One can always hope, perhaps this is an unpopular opinion but I actually like the Doyle. The disappointment with this hotel has me seriously worried about 7177 Quinpool. Assuming they manage to build the entire structure, there’s still the very real risk they cheap out on the design.
