Don't worry, the older you get the shorter a long period of time feels.

This tower definitely raises the bar. Will Barnett try and respond with his current assemblage?

I don’t think Barnett cares. Macklowe would be the one to watch. But this is a beautiful tower. Let’s see more of this topping the skyline. I don’t have a lot of faith that we’ll see as much beauty in the Empire Station complex, at least not on Vornado’s portion. But if there’s a goal to reach, let it be this.

Grand Central May Be Dwarfed By Midtown's Tallest Skyscraper
Plans were unveiled this week for the 1,600-foot Grand Hyatt tower, which would include major renovations to Grand Central's subway station.

The second-tallest building in New York City may soon take to the skies next to Grand Central Terminal, dwarfing the historic station but carrying the promise of major repairs.

The replacement for the Grand Hyatt Hotel at 175 Park Ave. would stand 1,646 feet tall, second only to One World Trade Center, according to a proposal unveiled Tuesday by the firms RXR and TF Cornerstone.

The 83-story skyscraper was made possible by the 2017 rezoning of Midtown East, which gives developers the ability to build office towers at greater densities.

..... It will be symmetrical and set back in four tiers to mimic the designs of pioneering skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building. Its stone-clad core and latticework pay tribute to Grand Central's design, developers said.

If the tower is built, Grand Central would be flanked by two skyscrapers — One Vanderbilt, which sits on the opposite side of the terminal, opened to the public in September.

Then you obviously haven’t been paying attention. New York was putting up supertalls again before the slenders came along. What’s great is that we are building supertall office buildings, which will always outnumber the supertall residentials here in any form.

Also reminds me of this pic i took in 2014, the only time ive ever been to NYC. Not an identical angle but similar and wow, what a transformation

^^^^

2014 was a very primitive NYC. Almost like a village.

It has grown so much since than!

Also great that these recent and proposed supertall office buildings don't rely too much on vanity height, which was the case for all three pre-slender, post-9/11/2001 ones.

Nothing wrong with vanity height - when it helps the appearance of the building. Both the ESB and Chrysler buildings have it, and wouldn't look as great without it.

Heads up on the LPC meeting. They'll present the same stuff shown at the CB5 meeting, but should be interesting anyway.

It’s ugly. One Vanderbilt deserves a higher caliber neighbor.

Ugly? Please. Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but you need better glasses. There is near universal praise, so I guess SOMEONE had to hate it. It speaks as a 21st century skyline headliner... artistic, futuristic yet timeless... FINALLY the biggest building in NYC will be one that acts like the biggest. It's NOT boxy, NOT boring... NOT typical(a few others have said it looks garish, something more comfortable in a big Asian city so I amend there has been slight criticism) but for the vast majority it's Christmas in February here celebrating this future crown jewel of the city.

One question...demolition of the present monstrosity should be 18 months in process, probably starting early next year. The whole development, including the expansive transit improvements anchored by the train hall among other things... should be open by 2030. Will groundbreaking start in 2024, will we see a significant upwards building for 2024-2026? Will we have a visible presence developing skyward well before the official targeted opening?

I often think haters are just jealous but how could someone be jealous of a building?

It's a 4 year (47 month) construction time for the building. So, depending on when the building gets under construction, 4 years after that will be the completion. It would likely top out a year or more before then. This is the closest we have to a schedule. I think the pandemic has already altered it.

A few more grabs...

Thanks for the document info...I believe it had been speculated here that demolition could start in 2022, maybe it can, but the document does have it starting in 2023. Makes sense the below grand transit infrastructure expansion gets started first, so if this timeline is going to hold we could really start seeing progrees in 2025 and five years from now, in 2026 a steady ascent to the sky. Finishing essentially in 2028, and officially opening in 2030 ... what a way to NYC 2030, having this masterpiece fully operational at that point!

Given that the scale of the renders is off by a solid 150' in height, what does that mean for the scale of the street level renders?

(I made some measurements and going by the PanAm building comparison, this is clocking in at or just below 1500')

There is no right rendering so i would like to see a true one with 1646ft height .
All pictures show that the rendering is below 1500ft.
