I heard they were planning to build Snow Kingdom for Winterlude on Zibi site (where Cirque was) this year. Wonder if this COVID lockdown changes their plans

They announced recently that Winterlude will be digital this year.

Thanks for posting.

This is a fantastic project. It will show that we don't need a forest of high-rise buildings for a dense, lively district. And give a real sense of unity between downtown Ottawa and Gatineau (completing LeBreton along Booth will be the last piece of the puzzle).

This bodes very well for the quality of the project as a whole. Ottawa needs this, it sets a great example of what could be done if mediocre firms like RLA and Claridge didn't have a death grip on development in this city.

Edit: I think this is some of Barry J. Hobin's best work to date. Kanaal looks amazing. O Condominiums by Figurr on the Gatineau plot look very RLAesque unfortunately, hopefully they step up the design for future development there.

I haven't been able to find any outside of the overall concept plans for Zibi. When we visited the sales centre last summer, they did not have any themselves (though the kid didn't even realize that the concept for the federal office tower on the other side was out).

Credit to the City of Ottawa for its DevApps website. Transparency we have never seen from Gatineau.

Very cool! I don't know the history at all. If that's the case it is still possible that the principals have evolved and/or modified their plans since separating from Windmill.

I was just going from this part of the Wikipedia entry for Chaudiere Falls '"Zibi" is a 37 acres (15 ha) mixed-use development started by Windmill Development Group, later joined by a larger development company, DREAM Unlimited Corporation, and then spun off from Windmill with a new company named Theia Partners, that includes residential, commercial, retail, office and hotel spaces, being built on the northern riverbank in Gatineau, QC, and on Chaudiere and Albert Islands in Ottawa, ON.

Meanwhile, in the some-things-never-change dept, the National Capital Commission is forging ahead in its quest to transform Lebreton into a Soviet-style collection of bland, souless blocks and towers. This week the NCC approved two new Claridge monstrosities:

I've given up on the Claridge part of the project. I don't think it's necessarily terrible. Walking around in real life gives a slight bit more appreciation for the project, but overall it was an exercise in mediocrity brought on by the visionless NCC of the early 2000s.

My focus now goes to Zibi and the rest of the Flats. Claridge Land will be reduced to nothing more than a background development when the rest is done.

I was a little taken aback and disappointed yesterday when I realized that the Peace Tower will be covered from view from the Bate Island viewpoint when the 25 story tower is complete. The new office building rises to just above ground level of the centre block from that vantage point already, but Parliament views from down the West river will be gone forever soon. I'm surprised that this is not a protected view plane. I love the Zibi project but that is one big nitpick for me.

Bate Island is 3km from Parliament. I think it would be a bit of a stretch to protect that view.

Agreed. I'm not trying to discredit the importance of view planes, as there are definitely some iconic ones, but Parliament does not need to be visible from every vantage point in the NCR.

I'm also surprised there's no protected view plane from Bate Island.

That said, it's a relatively unknown little island in the NCR. Very few locals and probably close to no visitors (other than maybe watersports enthusiasts) probably even know of the place, so it's not a massive loss. And if the lack of view planes results in a better Zibi, which is far more beneficial to the overall region, then that's a huge positive.

Besides, we'll get far better views from the Commanda Bridge (PoW) within the year if things go according to plan.

Side note: I am surprised that Chaudière Island can handle such tall buildings considering parking garages will likely be below the waterline.

I do my best! I arranged for picnic lunches there for residents of nearby buildings two summers ago and last year used it as a meet up point for outdoor chats with my friends. In summer, there's always a breeze there so it is very pleasant even on super hot days. Last summer, I went with my husband, just for a break from the apartment and ended up running into a couple of neighbours so I was glad it was getting local use.

If you just want to sit by the water, it is a better choice than Westboro Beach. Closer parking to your sitting spot and less noise since the sound from the rapids do a good job of blocking the traffic.

It is a gem. And will remain so even after Zibi is built.

BTW: thanks to whoever posted the co-working space photos. I've been interested in finding some place nearish and that is a good possibility once I'm vaccinated (so for summer 2022.) I can transit there and walk back or vice versa.
