That's great to hear. Curious if they are for another project on site or for the new chip plant.

A company is paying a 150k fee for an economic development application with Travis County which is what Tesla did. I'm guessing it's for this. https://www.bizjournals.com/austin/n...Pos=0#cxrecs_s

Council OKs Samsung's plan to relocate road amid reports of potential expansion

By Kathryn Hardison
January 27th. 2021

Samsung Austin Semiconductor LLC has garnered Austin City Council approval to rebuild Samsung Boulevard.

At it's Jan. 27 meeting, Council approved on consent Samsung's request to vacate two tracts of right-of-way that will allow the company to realign and rebuild its main road along the eastern boundary of some recently purchased land — yet another move by Samsung that hints it has something big planned for the Austin area. The approval comes amid reports that the Korean-based technology giant is looking to make an investment of up to $17 billion in a U.S. chipmaking plant.

Is there a map showing the land they acquired? I can't get behind the paywall - wondering if there's a free version online somewhere. Just curious.

Samsung wants SERIOUS tax rebate from the city for the factory. This doesn't seem worth 2,000 jobs.

My source says this is a done deal.

Samsung is building the plant here. Disregard if this has already been confirmed, I didn't read back enough to check.

I have coworker whose spouse works at Samsung and they said this has been a done deal for awhile. Must be theatrics to see what they can get?

Samsung recently received permitting to "Expand mechanical room at existing semiconductor manufacturing." This is what the cranes are most likely working on. Here's one of the Building Permits:

I've never ever been against economic incentives because that's how the game is played. You either play or lose. But if the info in that article is true, please go to Phoenix or Upstate NY Samsung. We'll be OK without you.

If Austin wants Samsung Semiconductor to bring its $17 billion state-of-the-art chipmaking plant to the Texas capital, Samsung wants a 100% property tax reimbursement on the project from the city for more than 20 years, according to documents reviewed by Community Impact Newspaper.

idk why you would expand a mechanical room absent a need for additional cooling equipment...

I'm with you. Austin's in that unique position where not dropping our pants entirely won't hurt us one bit. The metro's already straining to accommodate the econ dev pipeline we've got. NOT getting Samsung's no skin off our back.

If this were going to be just another run of the mill chip factory, I'd agree, but it's not. This factory will be as cutting edge as it gets. I'm not saying Austin shouldn't be tough in negotiations, but if you want the city to remain at the top of the technology game, you can't just let opportunities like this walk away.

Yah, I'm not saying let it walk away for sure. As ATX said, playing the subsidy game is still important. But we should be comfortable in not giving away the store. We're negotiating from a position of strength, and that's not always how municipalities decide to play this game.

If it were just outside of Austin city limits and still in the metro, I'd take that.
