Samsung recently received permitting to "Expand mechanical room at existing semiconductor manufacturing." This is what the cranes are most likely working on. Here's one of the Building Permits:

I've never ever been against economic incentives because that's how the game is played. You either play or lose. But if the info in that article is true, please go to Phoenix or Upstate NY Samsung. We'll be OK without you.

I'm with you. Austin's in that unique position where not dropping our pants entirely won't hurt us one bit. The metro's already straining to accommodate the econ dev pipeline we've got. NOT getting Samsung's no skin off our back.

If this were going to be just another run of the mill chip factory, I'd agree, but it's not. This factory will be as cutting edge as it gets. I'm not saying Austin shouldn't be tough in negotiations, but if you want the city to remain at the top of the technology game, you can't just let opportunities like this walk away.

Yah, I'm not saying let it walk away for sure. As ATX said, playing the subsidy game is still important. But we should be comfortable in not giving away the store. We're negotiating from a position of strength, and that's not always how municipalities decide to play this game.

If it were just outside of Austin city limits and still in the metro, I'd take that.
