The excavation under/around the SkyTrain pillars is for Gilmore Place, whose discussion thread is here: https://skyscraperpage.com/forum/showthread.php?t=214585

I have the greatest fear that this may be a white elephant. How many restaurants and food outlets does it take to make a mall successful. I miss the good old days of too many shoe stores.

I was surprised when I first saw the announced vendors that there was both Saku and Saboten. Brentwood is growing for sure, but is there enough market space for two Japanese pork cutlet restaurants? Maybe not.

I'm excited for the new food lounge. Is Shape gonna modernize the remaining parts of old mall (2 floors) or is there a plan for it?

Latest plans here:
https://shapeproperties.com/leasing/#/brentwood/plans

Note that the tent roof looks to be gone compared to past plans they have posted.

its going to take a few years till the next phase is built for it to be any good. The spaces in this first phase seem to be close to 100% filled and it seems there is maybe a dozen retailers, sporting life, H&M, adidas, Nike, W0-Mens club, JAC, Sephora, Urban Outfitters, SuitSupply, Express News and not sure what else from the list is like a retail store, the rest of the space is food/eating spaces. It doesn't seem like they are encouraging any retailers inside the old mall and many have moved out recently.

It's not going to steal away shoppers from anywhere for a few years.

According to Burnaby's newspaper "City Connect", both Brentwood and Lougheed are potentially getting new recreation centres.

Quote:
In the rapidly growing town centres of Brentwood and Lougheed, new recreation centres are being planned. At Lougheed, this includes a new Cameron Recreation Complex featuring aquatic facilities and a new library.

To improve north-south walking and cycling connections, a new pedestrian overpass over Highway 1 will connect the Deer Lake and Burnaby Lake areas. This will make it easier and safer to travel across the city using active transportation.
C'mon give us a swimming pool!

yeah, so the new food ones on that list are (though the mall listing may have been cut off at Small Victory):

Ebinoya
Glorious Bao
Hai Di Lao
Hello Nori
Ajishou Japanese
Prince Dim Sum
Soon Coffee
Steve's Poke Bar
ThaiGo
Yugo

There was supposed to be a big new community centre on the roof of the department store at the NW corner of the site, but since they've deleted the department store, that community centre has also disappeared from the plans.

I suppose so - just don't know where that would be.
The big space fronting the plaza below the Rec Room is supposed to be about 25,000 sq ft (they could always make it smaller).
Wouldn't want to have heavy weights dropping on the ceiling of Sporting Life though (?)

Otherwise in the old Sears?

yeah JAC is a popular Canadian brand, they have a lot of stores in China, had plans to open 35 stores in 2019 and are popular with Asian shoppers. They have a few stores in Vancouver. Nice looking stores.

Louis Castel is fairly high end Korean brand, they have stores in Ontario, should do well here.

Is the McDonalds ever going to open?

JAC was a Vancouver based brand. Rozemerie Cuevas, who was born in Vancouver, had a South Granville base for many years, and a decade ago relocated to the east side. More recently she has relocated her operation to China, where her business seems to be expanding dramatically.
