I can't emphasize enough how big the scale of The Well is. Massive footprint.

Lower Don Lands Redevelopment

Terrific 2 minute fly-over of the new river valley and more.
https://youtu.be/ZBNPDxCzbek

Nice flashback from Northern Light, before the Portlands' industrial life.

Northern Light's comment regarding the 1.5 million litres of groundwater per day that is being treated during construction of the river valley: “The challenges of excavating what was once one of the largest (non-ocean) coastal wetlands on the continent. The original marsh was over 5km2, or about 1,200 acres”.

Unpopular opinion: White spandrel has the potential to look a lot better than grey or blue spandrel, especially if the mullions are not glossy but a chrome or stainless steel finish.

I agree. The typical window wall used in Toronto never looks crisp. I don't see much point nitpicking colours as much as i like nitpicking. It's just depressing since the architectural design standard in the city is good.

The latest Well interior renders look absolutely stunning, but is anyone else iffy about these new LED slim wafer lights? I think they work nicely in the commercial setting in the rendering, but they look horrid in most condos or homes. They always seem overly bright and garish to me.

They're almost always found in these new monster homes with an overabundance of white and those white on white kitchens with porcelain "waterfall" counters that have been done to death.

I know Im nitpicking but I think they are often overabundant when they should be installed less often and more strategically.

Halifax

Brenton Suites

Source

Halifax has some mystery projects being built under old development agreements or as-of-right. This is one of them. Maybe 5 storeys? It is on a fairly prominent corner; this used to be a 3 storey brick building from the 40's. Hopefully the architecture is good.

Source

1 block down Cogswell is 5415 Cogswell. Apparently that Staples is owned by a local real estate developer (Southwest, the one that build Pavilion and is building Cunard) so a project for that site is somewhere in the pipeline too.

Source

A nice shot of Queen's Marque. Its exterior is still not quite finished. I think those metal pieces sticking out are attachment points for metal screens.

Source

Quinpool and Robie. There used to be a 10 storey or so 60's office building here. This will be a 25 storey tower, and another 23 storey is being built next door.

Source

The Governor construction site. A bit unusual for being a 7 floor 13 unit development. I mostly like this one because it's filling the final gap in what's otherwise a pretty good medium density mixed heritage area.

Some more Halifax updates from the Urban Halifax Tumblr:

Cunard site prep started today in Halifax. Kind of interesting because it still requires some adjustments before approval but the developer is going to start piling work now.

AC Marriott Ottawa on Rideau Street. The project will include a re-vamped Waller pedestrian mall, which has been closed for a decade or two due to issues with drugs and homelessness.

Thanks for all the Halifax updates. I don't go out east much any more but it's nice to see Halifax sharing in the national construction boom. I hate Maritime Centre though. Sometimes I wish they'd just bulldoze the thing and start over. I hope they build something substantial on that Staples site. That are can feel a little windswept due to being close to the Commons. Brenton suites sits on the lot I used to live on. Looks unrecognizable today.

I have mixed feelings about the Maritime Centre. It is one of the most imposing looking buildings in the city and looks good from certain angles, particularly farther away at street level. But it is becoming a dog's breakfast of mixed renovations and additions, and it replaced a handful of nice historic buildings.

Southwest Properties owns the Staples and like some other local developers they tend to build up a pipeline of projects that goes from land acquisition to approval to construction. Right now they just moved on from Curve/Pavilion to Cunard. Maybe Staples will be next and we will see a proposal in the next year or two and construction starting in 2-3 years. They also have a suburban development planned called Seton Ridge which is next to MSVU, so that could come before Staples.
