We shall see. Several airlines are bullish on pent-up demand and are hoping to see the return of 2019 numbers by late summer 2021. However, I'm not quite that bullish. Airlines and airports must continue to implement new and more advanced safety measures to increase consumer confidence. Additionally, a more consistent and systematic approach needs to be implemented when speaking of international travel.

Current schedules for U.S. domestic routes departures are going to be down 40%-45% across most airlines this month (December). And, international scheduled departures will be down 55% over the same period.

Monthly capacities are hovering around 50% versus 2019. And, most airlines are projecting at least a +50% change in capacity (post vaccine) in 2021 versus 2020.

Many CEOs seem to be falling back on the HUB structure to push them through a recovery. How exactly that will affect AUS, I'm not quite sure.

The expansion will happen. However, both the airport and airlines need to see how things develop over the coming 18 or so months to determine if any changes should be considered.

I think some vacation travel will see a large spike, but business travel is not going to be there for years.

Well, the Norwegian government just decided not to award any further aid to the airline. So, does this put the final nail in the coffin of this airline?!? Sounds like it may.

Dec 7 (Reuters) "On Monday, Ireland’s High Court granted creditor protection to the airline’s Irish subsidiaries, allowing it time to restructure its massive debt."

I get that we were still early in the process (waiting for fed approval, still pulling together funding sources) but I don't think it's a stretch to say there's been damage to the forward motion, and it's the only project no one's talking about publicly. CC expansion and Project Connect are both in the news. What's up with ABIA? Anyone heard anything at all?
I have no insider information, but I feel that the delay won't be as long as we might anticipate. The main caveat of a future expansion in the age of covid is funding, but these airport projects take years, if not decades, to fully realize and it would be well timed to be under construction during a travel downturn and open once the market stabilizes. This, of course, is assuming that air travel will one day return to and surpass 2019 traffic volumes, which is a big if. Whatever the future looks like, I hope we get the second terminal and rail connections. Fingers crossed.

Can they still qualify for federal grants considering all of the traffic projections are shot? Seems like they would have to heavily revise the master plan before going forward but I have no clue.

Also seems like work is about to finish on the east runway and it'll reopen as 17L/35R and then the west runway will close for 6 months.

TBH, I was wondering when we would start to see airlines start to put their chips down on what type of recovery, and when, we’re going to get.

Pretty safe play (a straight up leisure route) but also earlier in the season than I would’ve thought. I was thinking we’d start to see more flights around summer break. End of May, early June.

Yes. Here's a list of all Hawaiian Airlines US cities.
  1. Austin
  2. Boston
  3. Las Vegas
  4. Long Beach
  5. Los Angeles
  6. New York City - (Newark and JFK)
  7. Oakland
  8. Ontario
  9. Orlando
  10. Phoenix
  11. Portland
  12. Sacramento
  13. San Diego
  14. San Francisco
  15. San Jose
  16. Seattle

Hawaiian Airlines Destinations - North America

I'm hopeful this flight will do well. As someone else mentioned, leisure travel will likely come back before business travel does. Plus (for now) it's only twice weekly. If the demand is there, I'd think they'd be able to generate high enough load factors twice a week in each direction to make a profit.

Wasn't a route to HNL rumored some time back? Glad to see it come to fruition!

Well, sort of. I had said that Southwest was going to offer non-stop to HNL, but it was quickly debunked that the 737 could not fly that far without refueling.
